A fail safe control for a brake unit with an integral hydraulic brake booster for a road vehicle with a hydraulic dual-circuit braking system having a static front-axle brake circuit and a static rear-axle brake circuit connected respectively to primary and a secondary outlet-pressure space. The primary outlet-pressure space is delimited, by a piston element of the primary-piston arrangement and is in constant communicating connection with a second part space which is delimited by a secondary piston and by two piston elements which are displaceable relative to one another. One of these two piston elements is designed as an annular piston and the second as a plunger piston. A yoke-shaped first axial-force transmission element couples the primary piston with only one of the two piston elements. There is also a second axial-force transmission element coupling the other piston element with the drive piston and a third axial-force transmission element, via which a pedal force acts on the yoke-shaped axial-force transmission element upon failure of the brake booster.

A brake pressure control unit operable by a hydraulic brake power booster and functionally corresponding to a tandem master cylinder for two statically pressurizable brake circuits has two casing bores spaced laterally apart. In one of the bores, the primary output pressure space bounded by the primary piston and floating piston is accommodated, and in the second bore, a piston which is also a floating piston, bounds the secondary output pressure space by a piston flange. The floating piston bounding the primary output pressure space on one side has the effect of building up, in the end control pressure spaces of the first and second bores, the control pressure acting on the second floating piston. This pressure leads to a displacement of the second floating piston in the sense of a pressure build-up in the secondary pressure space. The second floating piston is connected to a double-acting hydraulic cylinder, which is likewise accommodated in the second casing bore. By alternative pressurization and relief of working spaces of the hydraulic cylinder taking place via electrically controllable valves, antilocking and propulsion regulation functions are made possible in the brake circuit connected to the secondary output pressure space. The primary piston of the brake pressure control unit has an annular piston and a plunger piston, having annular seals which impart reciprocal sealing and also sealing from the primary piston bore. By these annular seals, axially extending, coaxially arranged separating spaces are bounded, these spaces imparting an effective media separation between the hydraulic booster circuit and the primary brake circuit.

A vehicle hydraulic brake system having an anti-lock protection device and an automatic braking system, particularly when driving around bends. During automatic braking, an auxiliary pressure source supplies a pressure instead of the main brake cylinder and this pressure can be individually set by pressure reduction in the wheel brakes by means of the anti-lock protection device. For this purpose, cylinders with separating pistons are located between the auxiliary pressure source and the anti-lock protection device. The auxiliary pressure source supplies substantially lower auxiliary pressures than known systems by supplying pressure to the inlets of feed-back pumps by arranging valves which permit temporary pressure increases to the extent necessary for automatic braking by means of these feed-back pumps. The system requires less energy and less noise is caused in automatic braking operations.

A hydraulic dual-circuit brake system for a road vehicle, with front-axle/rear-axle brake-circuit division, is equipped with an anti-lock system working on the recirculation principle, a device for driving-dynamics control and a device for the automatic initiation of full braking when the driver actuates the brake pedal at a speed .phi. which is higher than a relevant threshold value .phi..sub.s. A pedal-position sensor and a pressure sensor which generates electrical output signals characteristic of the brake pressure fed into the front-axle brake circuit provide control of the brake-pressure control unit into the brake-pressure supply mode both by the pedal-controlled pressure loading of a drive-pressure space of its brake booster and by the valve-controlled pressure loading of the drive-pressure space of the brake booster. The valve-controlled pressure loading is capable of being initiated automatically by output signals from an electronic control unit. For a supplementary or sole supply of brake pressure to the front-axle brake circuit, an auxiliary cylinder can, by valve control, be loaded with and relieved again of the outlet pressure of an auxiliary-pressure source and is a pressure intensifier. Thereby, brake fluid can be displaced into the front-axle brake circuit both during normal braking and during automatically controlled braking. The brake-fluid quantity can be controlled in a predeterminable monotonic correlation from a comparative processing of the output signals of the pedal-position sensor with the output signals of the pressure sensor.

In an antilocking braking system, a pressure modulator is provided for the control of pressure reduction and pressure build-up phases, wherein a drive pressure space of this modulator is placed under a pressure control to move a modulator piston into an end position associated with a minimum volume of a work chamber, which forms a section of the master brake line. In this end position, a spring-loaded inlet valve, connected between the work chamber of the pressure modulator and the brake booster of the brake system, is held in its open position by a tappet. As a result of pressure release in the drive pressure space, the modulator piston is displaced in the direction of its end position associated with a maximum volume of the work chamber, so that brake fluid can flow back into the work chamber from one or more wheel brakes connected to this work chamber. In order to provide functional reliability and protect against a malfunction of the modulator together with its auxiliary pressure source and/or its inlet valve, a bypass flow path is provided which is both parallel to the flow path leading from the work chamber of the pressure modulator to the wheel brakes, and which can be released and closed by a solenoid valve.

A hydraulically power-assisted dual circuit brake system for road vehicles combined with an anti-locking brake system has a stepped tandem master cylinder and a primary piston. The primary piston includes a ring piston which is displaceable in a larger cylinder step and a plunger which is displaceable in said ring piston. A pre-pressure acting on the control area of the plunger of the primary piston is built up by pedal actuation of a further plunger. This pre-pressure operates as a reference pressure and is also coupled into a proportional control valve. The proportional control valve provides a control output pressure which is taken from the auxiliary pressure source and is higher. The control output pressure is used to impinge the ring piston and thereby move the plunger of the primary piston. With use of the ABS control, at least a secondary brake circuit, in a special design a primary brake circuit as well, is switched over from static to dynamic operation. In dynamic operation, the output pressure of the proportional control valve is used to operate the selected brake circuit. A stroke sensor monitoring the displacement stroke of the ring piston generates an output signal independently of the ABS control, which signal triggers the changeover of both brake circuits to dynamic operation when a threshold value of the ring piston stroke is reached.

A drive-slip control device (ASR) for a road vehicle also equipped with an anti-lock system (ABS) that works on the return-flow principle. The ASR works on the principle of decelerating a vehicle wheel tending to spin by subjecting its wheel brake to pressure. During the drive-slip control mode, the return pump of the ABS, has its inlet supply take place via a precharging pump as an auxiliary-pressure source. By an ASR control valve, the affected brake unit can be shut off from the main brake line of the brake circuit of the driven vehicle wheels. A valve arrangement, which is activatable by the output pressure of the precharging pump is provided to connect the outlet non-return valve of the precharging pump, and the ASR outlet valve (connected between the brake-fluid reservoir and the return line) to a pressure-medium line subjected to brake pressure for normal braking. In the drive-slip control mode, the valving arrangement connects the pressure-medium line to the return line and the outlet of the precharging pump to the inlet of the return pump of the brake circuit. A fault detection device is also provided.
