Polymeric compositions are disclosed containing miscible blends of copolymers, one of which is a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer containing about 5 to 30 weight percent ethylene and the other is a copolymer of either acrylic acid or a maleic anhydride with a comonomer selected from styrene, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. Windows of miscibility for each of the copolymer blends have been defined and the blends can be advantageously formed by polymerizing the acrylic acid copolymer in the presence of an emulsion of the vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in such a way that the polymerization takes place in the suspended vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer rather than in the aqueous phase.

The present invention is a class of semi-permeable polymeric membranes and processes for using such membranes to separate one or more components of a gas mixture. The membranes which are formed from a polymer blend of a first polyimide containing an aromatic diamine and a second polyimide containing an alkenylated diamine having an allyl or allylaryl group exhibit high gas perm-selectivities. The polyimide blends can be surface modified by treatment with an activating force such as high energy electromagnetic irradiation or with a free radical source to impart enhanced selectivity to the membrane without causing a large decrease in composite permeance. These membranes formed from polyimide blends are especially useful in effecting the separation of oxygen and nitrogen from air.

A poly(vinyl chloride) product is provided containing as a permanent plasticizer, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene which is copolymerized in the presence of porous particles of the PVC. The copolymerization is carried out in either suspension or emulsion and under conditions which provide a copolymer containing 60 to 85 wt % vinyl acetate in amounts from about 20 to 60 wt % of the vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in the final composition. A free flowing powder is formed which can be used for PVC compounding operations. If over 60 up to 80 wt % of the composition contains the copolymer, the product is a reinforced VAE dispersion.

Electrical joint compounds for the protection of electrical connections are formed from a solution of polymer dissolved in solvent with or without conductive filler. Partially cured thermosetting polymers are preferred as they flow under service conditions to better seal the electrical joints. Thermosetting polymers which cure by an addition mechanism are preferred over those which cure by condensation, and polyimides are most preferred.

This invention pertains to aqueous emulsions containing water insoluble, vinyl polymer particles containing polymerized N-vinyl formamide (NVF) units converted to water insoluble vinyl acetate polymers containing cationic, amine functional units. These latex dispersions are prepared by the emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and N-vinyl formamide. Preferably, vinyl acetate, optionally with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, are used to form the copolymer. The copolymer then is selectively hydrolyzed via acid hydrolysis of the N-vinyl formamide group to form water insoluble polymer particles.
