Abstract:
The unitary cylinder liner incorporating a water jacket is vertically cast as a one piece unit. The water jacket is draftless, allowing water to circulate therethrough more efficiently, increasing cooling capabilities. Such vertical one piece casting is made possible by the novel two piece core which eliminates the need for welding of metal bands onto an outer surface of the liner to produce the water jacker thereof. A novel method of vertical casting is also provided by use of the two piece core.

The unitary cylinder head and liner combination, is vertically cast as a one piece unit. The liner incorporates a water jacket therein. The water jacket is draftless, allowing water to circulate therethrough more efficiently, increasing cooling capabilities. Such vertical one piece casting is made possible by a novel two piece core which eliminates the need for welding of metal bands onto an outer surface of the liner to produce the water jacket thereof. A novel method of vertical casting is also provided which allows the cylinder head to be cast integral with the liner, allows for increased water capacity in the liner and integral head passages, and allows for a plurality of enlarged air intake channels to be provided.

Abstract:
A ceramic filter candle arrangement employs a plurality of filter candles held within a tube plate by hold-down weights, each having a flow path, and includes a conduit communicating with the flow path and protruding into the candle filter. A passage is formed between the conduit and the internal wall of the filter candle and leads to at least one exhaust port. In operation, the passage and the exhaust port allow controlled pressure wave leakage during gas pulse cleaning of the filter candle.
Abstract:
The improved outlet end cooling system for a cylinder head of a locomotive engine includes a modified water pathway in the cylinder head, an outlet therefrom exiting from an upwardly directed surface of the cylinder head, and further including a modified rocker arm support having a planar bottom support surface and having an inlet port therein which is engageable with an outlet port in the cylinder head. The support has a water pathway therein which terminates in a nipple, the nipple extending past the cylinder head and downwardly along a side wall of the cylinder head into engagement with a remaining portion of the waterway. The improved outlet end allows for equal thickness of the side wall around the entire extent thereof, and eliminates a temperature gradient in an area of the cylinder head underlying a crab plate engaged thereover, virtually eliminating cracking and extending the useful life of the cylinder head.
Abstract:
The piston made in accordance with the teachings herein includes a primary compression ring groove, a bottom and rear wall surface of which are hardened by the method of laser hardening. The method includes the steps of spraying the primary groove with a graphite spray and then directing an angled elliptical in cross section laser beam at the bottom surface of the groove while rotating the cylinder head at predetermined parameters.
