    摘要: An improved method is provided for fabricating a polarisation rotator in a rib waveguide having a propagation axis and opposite side walls. The method includes etching a pit in the substrate surface to form a recess in one of the side walls of the waveguide, during formation of the waveguide on the substrate surface, so as to provide an asymmetric waveguide section for imparting polarisation rotation to radiation propagated along the propagation axis. Preferably the pit is formed by a wet etching step forming an upper side surface within the recess that is inclined relative the waveguide side walls, and the waveguide side walls are formed by a dry etching step to extend perpendicularly to the substrate surface. In addition the dry etching step forms a lower side surface adjoining the upper side surface within the recess and tilted relative to the upper side surface. Such a method is significantly simplified as compared with prior art production methods, as well as providing greater yield and more predictable device performance since mask alignment errors no longer affect the design parameters of the rotator.

    摘要: An optical pulse train generator (2) for use in the transmission of high speed optical data in a return-to-zero (RZ) signalling format is described. The generator (2) comprises a light source (4) operable to produce an unmodulated output; an electro-optic interferometric optical modulator (6) for intensity modulating the unmodulated optical output in dependence on an sinusoidal drive voltage (vdrive) to produce a modulated optical signal, wherein the modulator (6) has an optical transmission versus drive voltage characteristic which is sinusoidal in form and wherein the modulator (6) is operable about a point of minimum optical transmission of said characteristic and said drive voltage has a amplitude (Vdrive) which exceeds one cycle (Vπ) of said characteristic such that the modulated optical signal is non-sinusoidal; and optical pulse shaping means (8, 10, 12) for aligning the phase of the frequency components of said modulated optical signal to produce an optical pulse train in which the pulses are substantially transform limited.

    摘要: A signal time-scaling arrangement utilises a known configuration comprising the use of a laser which has its wavelength varied over time, a modulator coupled to the laser and to a modulating analogue electrical source and a dispersion means coupled to the output of the modulator and providing at its output a signal which is a stretched version of the analogue modulating signal, but provides for the modulator to be a single-sideband modulator instead of double-sideband. The effect of this is to enable the use of a much simple laser-control system involving a CW laser output which is wavelength-ramped continuously between quite narrow wavelength limits, while allowing the use of a dispersion means having a wide dispersion characteristic in order to provide the required degree of time-scaling. The invention is application to an ADC system or to a Doppler system.
