Abstract: 908,591. Plastics containers. STAHL, W. F. Feb. 24, 1961, No. 6773/61. Class 66. A method of forming a synthetic plastics container comprises placing a tube 12 of oriented plastics material on a mandrel 10, one end of the tube extending beyond the free end of the mandrel, inserting a disc 13 into the end of the tube and against the mandrel, and applying heat to the tube to shrink it about the mandrel and disc. The disc may be held against the mandrel by vacuum applied through a passage 11. The tube may be shrunk by immersion in a heated mercury bath, by means of a stream of hot air, by gas flame on by an electric coil. The tube may be of orinted polystyrene, or oriented polyglycol terephthalate. The container may be removed from the mandrel by reversing the flow of air in the passage 11. The disc 13, which may be of non-oriented plastics metal or paper, is of larger diameter than the end of the mandrel. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the mandrel has an end of reduced diameter thereby varying the shape of the finished container.
