This invention provides a simplified communication system that transmits voice and SDSL signals between customer premise equipment (“CPE”) on a single twisted-pair line. The system preferably includes at least one combiner for combining voice and SDSL signals into a combined voice/SDSL signal that can be transmitted to the CPE on a single twisted pair of wires, preferably a pair of wires currently being used to transmit the voice signal to the CPE. One combiner is ideally located at a common wiring closet of the building where the CPE is located. The combiner is ideally coupled to the existing pair of wires for the voice signal. This eliminates the need to add another set of wires between the common wiring closet and the CPE for the SDSL signal. A second combiner, normally located at or near the CPE, separates the combined voice/SDSL signal into the separate voice and SDSL signals for processing by the CPE. A portable radio telephone handset includes the capability of operating as a data transfer terminal as well as an analog cellular telephone subscriber station. Two modes of operation are available in the handset, an analog cellular communication mode and a Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) mode. A paging function for incoming analog cellular communication is carried out on a CDPD channel. The handset distinguishes between paging signals identifying CDPD mode communications and paging signals identifying analog cellular communications. The handset automatically preempts CDPD communications in favor of analog cellular communications such as those carried out in an AMPS configuration.

A cellular digital packet data (CDPD) system includes a mobile data base station (MDBS) configured to interface easily with an advanced mobile phone system (AMPS). The elements of the MDBS are arranged on modules and the functionality of the MDBS is divided among the modules to facilitate flexibility, compactness and quick expansion of the MDBS. To further facilitate compactness, the MDBS includes a transceiver/modem board which uses a single chip to carry out delta-sigma modulation. In order to maintain the integrity of CDPD transmission, a channel hopping scheme is used based upon avoidance of AMPS channel use. A distinctive protocol is used to encapsulate control/query/response data for transmission throughout the CDPD system. This protocol also facilitates easy control of each MDBS throughout the system.
