In performing control to supply power to a heater by detecting the impedance of a sensor element and feeding it back for control, a heater control device for an air-fuel ratio according to the invention can prevent damage to the heater or the sensor element by suppressing an excessive rise in the temperature of the heater and hence the sensor element even when the impedance of the sensor element has increased due to degradation of the sensor element. The heater control device includes: a feedback control unit which, based on the impedance of the air-fuel ratio sensor element, controls supply power to the heater for heating the air-fuel ratio sensor; a half-activation time detection unit which detects the half-activation time of the air-fuel ratio sensor; and a power limiting unit which, based on the half-activation time detected by the half-activation time detection unit, limits the power that is feedback-controlled by the feedback control unit.

When an electric current is supplied to an electrically heated catalyst mounted on a vehicle, oxygen that is required is supplied by setting the air-to-fuel ratio to become lean, and the engine during this period is prevented from losing stability. When the electrically heated catalyst is in a condition to be supplied with an electric current, the alternator driven by the internal combustion engine is disconnected from the battery and the current is supplied to the electrically heated catalyst. At the same time, the air-to-fuel ratio of the internal combustion engine is set to the lean region, and a deviation is found between the present engine running speed and the target running speed found from the operation conditions of the engine. The field current of the alternator is controlled toward a direction in which the deviation decreases and, at the same time, the amount of electric power supplied from the alternator to the electrically heated catalyst is monitored. When an average amount of electric power supplied within a predetermined period of time becomes smaller than a predetermined value, the running speed of the internal combustion engine is forcibly increased to promote the rise of temperature based upon the reaction of the catalyst with the fuel and, at the same time, the internal combustion engine is prevented from losing stability even under the lean conditions.

With this construction of the method and apparatus according to the present invention, optimum fuel injection amount and timing control can be realized in accordance with the change in altitude and/or the change in atmospheric pressure, i.e. environmental conditions, thus reducing black smoke, knockings, noises and also enabling the fuel consumption rate to be reduced.

According to the present invention, the exhaust gas recirculation amount can be accurately controlled in accordance with the change in the atmospheric pressure, or altitude where the engine is running.

An output value of the in-cylinder pressure sensor at an exhaust stroke of the same cycle is also acquired to calculate comparison data related to the in-cylinder pressure at the exhaust stroke from the acquired sensor output value. Two comparison data are compared to specify the EGR rate of an air-fuel mixture provided for combustion from a difference between the values.
