The invention is aimed to provide a core-sheath type composite filament, in which a functional component is hardly lost due to volatilization during the melt forming; bleeding of the internally added functional component is effectively inhibited; the internally added functional component does not adversely affect spinning properties, stretching properties, strength and dimensional stability; the use of the functional component can be greatly reduced, leading to a reduction of production cost; superior functionalities of deodorizing properties and antimicrobial properties can be exhibited to a maximum extent; even when contacting with water, the functionalities can be kept over a long time; and the composite filament is highly safe to a human body. A metal halide discharge lamp operated from a D.C. power source, which is suitable for an optical light source, has a quartz arc tube. Anode and cathode electrodes are disposed in the arc tube. The gap length between electrodes is so short that the metal halide discharge lamp functions as a point light source. The arc tube contains an inert gas, mercury and metal halide additives including metal bromine. By utilizing the catephoresis effects, the transformation of silica (SiO.sub.2) of the arc tube to cristobalite or the formation of an opaque substance on the arc tube is prevented. Atomic percent of bromine to halogen contained in the arc tube is about 60% to 90% and a wall load developed in the arc tube is substantially greater than 40 W/cm.sup.2.

A high-efficacy, high power ultraviolet radiation lamp is disclosed. Electrodes are respectively provided at two ends of a discharge tube, and at least a rare gas is sealed in the discharge tube. The discharge tube is curved in a U shape. A reservoir for reserving a radiant material for radiating ultraviolet rays projects from the discharge tube. An isolating section is provided to surround at least the reservoir. The isolating section adjusts the temperature of the reservoir and supplies an appropriate amount of radiant material into the discharge tube.
