An easily water-soluble or water-dispersible sizing component, which contains cationized polyvinyl butyral or other equivalent cationized polyvinyl acetal, for the improvement of surface properties of paper or other equivalent web product. Cationized polyvinyl butyral can be prepared by cationizing polyvinyl butyral or by butyrating cationized polyvinyl alcohol. The sizing component typically contains 50-90% polyvinyl butyral or other corresponding polyvinyl acetal, and 10-50% of a softener, such as castor oil. The polyvinyl butyral containing sizing component can be used for example in the surface sizing of base paper of release paper and of inkjet paper or in the formation of a barrier layer on the paper surface.

The invention relates to a water-dispersible composition for making a water repellent paper with a low permeability for moisture. The composition comprises components (A) to (H), in the following amounts by dry weight (wt): (A) 5 to 89 wt % of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), (B) 1 to 20 wt % of styrene maleic imide (SMI), (C) 5 to 50 wt % of ethylene acrylate, (D) 0 to 20 wt % of polyvinyl alcohol or starch, (E) 0 to 7 wt % of wax, (F) 0 to 6 wt % of styrene maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA), (G) 0 to 70 wt % of styrene butadiene (SB) latex and (H) 0 to 70 wt % of talc. The invention further relates to an easily macerating moisture-proof paper comprising a base paper having coated on at least one surface thereof a layer of an aqueous emulsion comprising a water-dispersible composition, wherein the solid content in the aqueous emulsion is from 30 to 65 % by weight.

The invention relates to coated board, a process for its manufacture, and containers and packaging formed therefrom. The board comprises at least one polymer-based coat preventing the transmission of liquids and gases, which coat is according to the invention made from a polymer dispersion to which talc particles are added so that talc will constitute 30-80% of the dry weight of the dried coat. The coating is applied onto the board during its manufacture as on-line coating. The board may be, for example, a multi-layer board (2) which has a middle layer (6) containing CTMP or other similar mechanical pulp, on its both sides outer layers (7) formed from sulfate pulp, against these on both sides of the board (2) talc-containing polymeric barrier layers (3), and on one side of the board a heat sealing layer (9) introduced onto the barrier layer (3).
