The semiconductor device comprises a super luminescence diode, at least one waveguide type photo-diode and at least one Y-branch integrated on a single semiconductor substrate. The waveguide structure of the super luminescence diode, photo-diode and Y-branch shares common optical guide layers formed by concurrent crystal growth. At least part of the optical guide layers are located on the side of the semiconductor substrate away from an active layer of the super luminescence diode and an optical absorption layer of the photo-diode.

The orientation of the rotating direction of an optical fiber in an optical fiber array takes the positional axial displacement into consideration. In a method of aligning the orientation of optical fibers, or the axial displacement in an optical fiber array having a plurality of optical fibers, and an optical fiber holding member, an enlarged image of the optical fiber is obtained for each of the optical fibers using an image pick-up means. Then, a distribution of the characterized image corresponding to the positions in the radial direction of the image of the optical fiber are obtained from the enlarged image. From the distribution of the characterized image, the orientation of the rotational direction to the center of the optical fiber, or the positional axial displacement of the core center, is measured. Based on the measured result, the orientation of the rotational direction, or the positional axial displacement to the holding member of the optical fiber, is aligned with an optical fiber rotating mechanism.

Disclosed is an optical fiber gyroscope comprising a fiber coil composed of a lengthy optical fiber wound therearound in a predetermined number of turns, a coupler for optically coupling an optical fiber led from a light source and an optical fiber led to a photodetector, and an optical IC chip arranged between the fiber coil and the coupler and provided with a phase modulator and a polarizer mounted on an optical waveguide, the optical fiber gyroscope further comprising a fiber coil reel around which the lengthy optical fiber for constructing the fiber coil is wound in the predetermined number of turns, a coupler reel around which the optical fibers led in both directions from the coupler are wound in a predetermined number of turns, and a housing member including a plurality of compartments (reel-placing region, frame, frame) for accommodating at least the both reels, the light source, and the optical IC chip. Accordingly, the optical fiber gyroscope can be easily assembled in unit, and it is possible to effectively reduce the production cost of the optical fiber gyroscope.
