This invention relates to a novel microorganism capable of oxidizing manganese such as the genus Cedecea bacterium GSJ/MITA24A/ASHO-RO/1, the genus Aeromonas bacterium GSJ/MITA24B/ASHO-RO/2, or the genus Shewanella bacterium GSJ/MITA24C/ASHO-RO/3; to a method for removing manganese from water containing manganese, which comprises contacting the water containing manganese with a microbial symbiont of algae and one or more microorganisms capable of oxidizing manganese to oxidize and precipitate the manganese, thereby removing the manganese from the water; and to a method of recycling the recovered manganese.

There is disclosed a method and an apparatus, of treating wastewater containing chemical substances, which comprises passing, into a continuous phase of water to be treated that has been formed by supplying raw water from an upper part of a tower, a supercritical fluid, from a lower part of the tower, to the upper part thereof, to bring the water to be treated and the supercritical fluid in countercurrent contact with each other, thereby separating the chemical substances from the water to be treated. These method and apparatus make it possible to treat wastewater containing chemical substances at a medium concentration, for which conventionally an effective physical or chemical treatment method is not found, efficiently without involvement of any secondary pollution.

A method for separating substances from liquid by flotation using bubbles which comprises adsorbing a substance present in a liquid on bubbles, floating the bubbles adsorbing the substance and separating the substance from the bubbles, characterized by allowing the bubbles adsorbing the substance to ascend through a fluid route in a tube independent of the ambient turbulently flowing liquid and then collecting and separating the substance from the liquid at the upper end of the tube. An apparatus for separating substances from liquids by flotation using bubbles which comprises a vertical column provided at the bottom thereof with a gas-diffusing means and a tube placed inside the vertical column, the tube being smaller in diameter and length than the vertical column and being provided with a means for collecting bubbles at the lower end thereof and a means for accommodating and concentrating the collected bubbles at the upper end thereof. These method and apparatus are useful for the treatment of waste water and industrial effluents or of mineral extracts, especially for the purpose of recovering useful substances from a solution or suspension thereof or removing heavy metals and the like harmful substances from effluents.
