The invention relates to a facile synthesis of a series of 2-(4′-alkoxyphenyl)-5-cyanopyridine liquid crystal compounds which are represented by the following formula (I): wherein CnH2n+1 is a linear alkyl group having 2-12 carbon atoms. The synthesis of the liquid crystalline 2-(4′-alkoxyphenyl)-5-cyanopyridine is completed in a two-step reaction. First, a Grignard reagent (such as 4-alkoxyphenylmagnesium bromide) is added to a 3-cyanopyridinium salt (such as N-phenyloxycarbonyl-3-cyanopyridinium chloride) to get a 1,2-dihydropyridine. Then, the 1,2-dihydropyridine is oxidized with o-chloronil to obtain the 2-(4′-alkoxyphenyl)-5-cyanopyridine.

The present invention relates to a method of evaluating the cancer state of a subject using lecithin:retinol acyl transferase (LRAT) gene promoter methylation status. Methods of analyzing and quantifying LRAT gene promoter methylation level are also disclosed. The present invention also relates to methods of determining the prognosis for s subject having cancer by assessing LRAT mRNA expression and LRAT protein expression. Methods of cancer detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are also disclosed.

The projection may also include a cover (22). In another embodiment, a method for using a closure includes inserting a. spike member into a projection, piercing a membrane that hermetically seals a medical container, pushing rib members within the projection to center the spike member inserted into the projection, and tearing the membrane to create a vent hole in the membrane.

A photoresist removal method is described. A substrate having thereon a positive photoresist layer to be removed is provided. The positive photoresist layer is UV-exposed without using a photomask. A development liquid is used to remove the UV-exposed positive photoresist layer. The substrate as provided may further have thereon a sacrificial masking layer under the positive photoresist layer. The sacrificial masking layer is removed after the UV-exposed positive photoresist layer is removed.
