The present invention is directed at a grease composition comprising:A. an oil component having a major amount of a synthetic fluid having a viscosity of at least 50 cSt at 40.degree. C. and a minor amount of a mineral oil having a pour point below -20.degree. C.; andB. a thickener.The oil component of the grease composition preferably comprises between about 30 and 90 wt. % synthetic oil, more preferably between about 40 and about 80 wt. % synthetic oil and from 70 to 10 wt. % and preferably 60 to 20 wt. % mineral oil. The viscosity of the synthetic oil preferably is at least 50 cSt, more preferably at least 100 cSt at 40.degree. C. The synthetic oil preferably is selected from polyolefins, esters, polyesters, high VI isoparaffins, and mixtures thereof, with polyalphaolefins being particularly preferred. The polyalphaolefins preferably comprise C.sub.8 and C.sub.12 monoalphaolefin building blocks.

Solvent-free lubricant compositions having improved lubricity properties comprising a basestock having a kinematic viscosity of about 1.5 to 3.0 cSt at 100.degree. C., about 3 to 15 wt % of bright stock having a kinematic viscosity about 20 to 40 cSt at 100.degree. C., about 3 to 15 wt % of a polyisobutylene having a number average molecular weight of about 400 to 1050 and about 3 to 15 wt % of a polyisobutylene having a number average molecular weight of about 1150 to 1650. Minor amounts of the lubricant composition may be incorporated into a distillate fuel to provide a lubricant oil-fuel composition for two-cycle engines.

More specifically, the load-carrying capability of a grease is increased when a polyhydric alcohol having at least three hydroxy groups and at least two metal hydrocarbylthiophosphate compounds in which the metal is different in at least two compounds are incorporated into said grease. Glycerol is a preferred polyhydric alcohol while antimony dialkyldithiosphosphate and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate are preferred hydrocarbylthiophosphate compounds.

A method for manufacturing a lubricating grease having improved properties is described. The method comprises reacting a pyrrolidone with a fatty amine and subsequently adding a metal hydroxide to the reaction when the unreacted fatty amine content ranges between about 33 and about 66 wt. % of the fatty amine originally added. The grease thus formed will be a NLGI #0 grade grease that has the high temperature stay-in-place properties of a NGLI #2 grade grease.

A process for continuously manufacturing a lubricating grease using a screw process unit comprising:(a) introducing feed materials and lubricating oil into selected locations of a screw process unit which contains a series of adjacent, longitudinally connected barrel sections for performing different operative steps and houses a rotating screw device traversing the interior of the barrel sections and having separate elements along its length to perform desired operations;(b) mixing and conveying said feed materials along said process unit through the adjacent barrel sections by continuous operation of said rotating screw;(c) controlling the temperature of said material while it is being conveyed through said process unit by use of various heat exchange means which are located in or adjacent each barrel to aid in carrying out the operative steps of dispersion, reaction, dehydration and/or homogenization;(d) venting water resulting from the dehydration of the feed mixture at selected barrel discharge points in said process unit;(e) introduction of additional lubricating oil and/or additives at downstream barrel locations following the dehydration step;(f) homogenization of said complete grease formulation by continued rotation of said screw device; and(g) removal of the finished lubricating grease from the end barrel section of said screw process unit.
