    Abstract: A system capable of connecting a device to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) using an adapter. The adapter may connect to the PSTN and send audio data between the PSTN and a server via a data network, enabling the device to communicate over the PSTN. In addition, the adapter enables a telephone connected to a home telephone circuit to perform voice commands, by sending audio data from the telephone to the server and the server determining voice commands included in the audio data. In addition, the system may enable additional functionality for the home telephone circuit, such as three way calling, avoiding charge calls, detecting outgoing alarm signals and triggering an alarm response, monitoring call statistics of telephone calls and sending intercom signals to telephones connected to the home telephone circuit.

    Abstract: Techniques for enabling a system to create a multimedia messaging service (MMS) message or a short message service (SMS) message from a spoken message are described. A system may receive audio data corresponding to a spoken message. The system may determine a recipient of the spoken message as well as a device associated with the recipient. The system may determine the type of messaging supported by the device. Based on the messaging capabilities, the system generates either a MMS message or a SMS message. The MMS message may include a message payload including a portion of text corresponding to content of the message as well as audio data embedded in the message payload. The SMS message may include a message payload including a portion of text corresponding to content of the message as well as a link to message content audio data stored by the system.

The system may enable the device to receive an incoming call from the PSTN and may provide additional functionality, such as determining call statistics during the telephone call, determining if another telephone receives audio data during the telephone call and detecting an alarm signal sent via the PSTN.
