Abstract: An adhesive composition comprises (1) 5097% by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of hydrolysis varying between 70% and 100%, (2) correspondingly 50-3% by weight of a water-soluble alkylenebisacrylamide, and (3) from 10-6 to 10-1 mole of ceric ion per mole of alkylenebisacrylamide. The alkylenebisacrylamide may be methylenebisacrylamide. The ceric salt may be ceric nitrate, sulphate, iodate, perchlorate, ceric ammonium nitrate, sulphate, or pyrophosphate. Clay and starch may also be added. It is desirable to disperse the components in water and adjust the pH to, preferably, below 4. Examples are given showing the use of the composition in laminating 2 layers of kraft paper.
