A filter bag is made from a single piece of needled felt, of nylon, rayon, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic or natural fibres, and sewn along multiple row seams 11, 13. Seams 13 may be straight or curved as shown and intersect at point 12. Seam 11 may extend down 'to point 12, using a blank as in Fig. 8 (not shown) or may be aligned with seams 13 (Fig. 4, not shown). Optimum bursting strength is achieved with seams 13 inclined at 32 to 45 degrees to a transverse plane. The open end of the bag is folded over a reinforcing hoop by which the bag is supported on a flange through which liquid is delivered. Filtrate tends to run from lowest point 12 of the bag, but an extension (Fig. 12, not shown) can improve this. The bag may be reinforced by an outer muslin bag (Figs. 6, 9, not shown), made larger to allow the felt bag to expand. Or the felt bag is located in a wire mesh support (Fig. 7, not shown).
