Abstract: A method of fabricating a polarization sensor is described. It includes a quarter-wave plate to convert circularly polarized light into linearly polarized light. The quarter-wave plate is realized as a metasurface. The sensor also includes a linear polarizer to analyze the light generated by the quarter wave plate, and a photodetector to receive the analyzed light. The sensor may be combined with other linear polarization sensors to form a sensor capable of complete measurement of the polarization state of incident light.

Abstract: A method for inspection for a photovoltaic module or cell is disclosed. The method includes acquiring one or more polarimetric images of the photovoltaic module or cell using a camera which may include a polarization sensor, analyzing the one or more polarimetric images, and identifying a presence of a defect in the photovoltaic module or cell. A device for inspection for a photovoltaic module or cell is also disclosed, wherein the device includes a camera having a polarimetric sensor and is configured to be positioned at one or more locations relative to a location of the photovoltaic module or cell.

Abstract: An additive manufacturing process for forming a metallic layer on the surface of the substrate includes fabricating a substrate from a polymerizable composition by a stereolithographic process, and contacting the reactive surface with an aqueous solution including a metal precursor. The metal precursor includes a metal, and the polymerizable composition includes a multiplicity of multifunctional components. Each multifunctional component includes a reactive moiety extending from a surface of the substrate to form a reactive surface. An interface between the reactive surface and the aqueous solution is selectively irradiated to form nanoparticles including the metal in a desired pattern. The nanoparticles are chemically coupled to the reactive surface by reactive moieties, thereby forming a metallic layer on the surface of the substrate.

Abstract: A circular polarization filter of a chiral metasurface structure is disclosed including a substrate having a nanograting pattern extending from the substrate, a dielectric layer formed directly on the nanograting pattern, and a plasmonic structure in direct contact with the dielectric layer, where the plasmonic structure may be oriented at a nonzero angle with respect to the nanograting pattern. An integrated polarization filter array is also disclosed including include a linear polarization filter, and a circular polarization filter. Methods of detecting full-stokes polarization using an integrated polarization filter array having both linear and circular polarization filters made from chiral metasurface structures is disclosed. Methods of using a Mueller matrix to evaluate polarization response of any optical device or system is also disclosed.

Abstract: An optical device is disclosed. The optical device includes a silicon substrate, an aluminum oxide layer, an aluminum layer between the silicon substrate and the aluminum oxide layer, and a metasurface nanostructure. The metasurface nanostructure may include a graphene monolayer on the aluminum oxide layer and an electrically conductive nanoantenna array in direct contact with the graphene monolayer, where each nanoantenna in the nanoantenna array may include multiple segments, each segment having one or more parameters selected to achieve simultaneous resonance in the mid-infrared and the near infrared spectral regions when the graphene monolayer is irradiated with a near infrared pump pulse and a continuous mid-infrared probe. The optical device generates mid-infrared pulses via ultrafast modulation of hot carriers in the monolayer graphene.
