摘要: A method of active radiometric thermometry. The target, whose temperature is to be measured, is heated briefly and locally, preferably by a pulse of laser radiation. The intensity of infrared or visible radiation emitted by the heated portion of the target is measured as a function of time. The temperature of the target is inferred from the shape of the intensity curve of the emitted radiation as a function of time.

摘要: An improved waveguide for an infrared thermometer, comprising a silver halide optical fiber cable of low transmission loss, a high aspect ratio, and a radially decreasing index of refraction. The transmission loss is low enough to enable the cable to be up to ten meters in length, thereby extending beyond the housing of the thermometer and being insertable in confined spaces such as an ear canal. The small cross sectional area and radially decreasing index of refraction of the cable make the field of view of the cable small enough to enable it to resolve targets as small as a portion of the human tympanic membrane, enabling the device to be used to measure the core temperature of humans and other organisms.

摘要: An infrared optical element, and methods for its manufacture. The optical element is made by cold working an ingot of a soft crystalline ionic solid such as silver halide or a thallium halide inside a sacrificial split die. The solid preferably includes at most one part per million of metallic impurities and at most ten parts per million total impurities. Preferably, the Knoop hardness of the ionic solid is at most about 20, and the elongation ratio of the ionic solid is at least 10% at a temperature of 120-180° C. The optical element maybe a bulk element or a surface element. The optical element may be a refractive element, a diffractive element or a hybrid element. One such element is a flat sensor for attenuated total reflection spectroscopy. In one embodiment of the sensor, a thin layer of silver halide or thallium halide is formed by diffusion or deposition on the surface of a substrate having a lower index of refraction than the layer. The sensor also includes a mechanism for coupling infrared radiation in and out of the layer. The scope of the invention includes a cell for attenuated total reflection spectroscopy based on the sensor, and a spectrometer for attenuated total reflection spectroscopy based on the cell. It also includes an external sensor, which is connected to the spectrometer via two long infrared fibers, which enable measurements in remote locations.

摘要: A thermoluminescence (TL) dosimetry (TLD) system comprises at least one TLD element that is controllably heated and which temperature is monitored in real time using an infrared (IR) radiometry subsystem that provides respective IR radiation inputs to a control subsystem. The control subsystem uses the inputs to effect the heating control. The TLD system further comprises a TL measuring subsystem for measuring TL emission data from each heated TLD element, the TL data used in obtaining a does curve indicative of the total radiation to which the TLD element has been exposed.

摘要: A method for lithographically fabricating devices is disclosed. In accordance with the method, a sacrificial coating material (SCM), e.g., a resist, mixed with a fluorescent material is deposited onto a substrate and then etched. SCM etching is monitored by subjecting the fluorescent material within the SCM to fluorescence-inducing energy, and detecting the resulting fluorescence. Because the fluorescent material is etched away as the SCM is etched, fluorescence intensity decreases as SCM thickness is reduced. Thus, SCM etch end point is accurately determined because etch end point corresponds to the point in time when the detected fluorescence ceases.

摘要: An optical recording medium, an optical recording system and an optical recording method, based on the suppression of the absorption coefficient of a polymeric film at selective wavelength in the infra-red as a result of irradiation the film with a beam of a CO2 laser. The magnitude of the effect, which is observable only above a threshold power of the laser beam, is related to the energy deposited by the writing beam. Optical recorded information is stored in the modified absorbance spectrum of the polymer and is read by an infra-red photometric device in the transmission mode.
