There are provided a storage device for outputting-data in such a manner that whether or not error correction has been made can be discriminated, and a data processing system in which a storage device furnishes data to a data processing device in such a manner that whether or not the area management information has been corrected for errors can be discriminated and in which the data processing device discriminates whether or not the area management information has been corrected for errors in order to perform predetermined data processing. There is also provided a data processing method for the storage device and for the data processing system. If there is any error correctable by an error processing unit 26 in the area management information read out from the flash memory 21, the controller 27 furnishes the area management information to the error correction processing unit 26 and appends a flag indicating the fact of error correction to the area management information corrected for errors to output the resulting data.

A receptacle for the memory card is also disclosed. The memory card has a simple structure designed to positively protect the terminals and easily let out dust or the like from inside, thereby permitting to assure a positive connection with the receptacle.

A technique to determine whether a memory unit currently attached to a data processing unit is of a predetermined type or types. When the power of the data processing unit is turned on, it is determined whether or not a memory unit has been attached to the data processing unit. Thereafter, data is read from a boot block of the memory unit. With reference to identification information of the boot block, it is determined whether or not the attached memory unit is a first type memory unit, such as a security type memory unit. If the attached memory unit is a security type memory unit, an authenticating process is performed. After the memory unit has been authenticated, contents data may be recorded or reproduced. If the attached memory unit is not a security type memory unit, a message that represents that the memory unit cannot be used may be issued. If the data processing unit is a non-security type data processing unit, a normal operation is performed regardless of whether the memory unit attached thereto is a security type or non-security type memory unit.

A memory card and apparatus used therewith. The memory card comprises a rectangular card body having terminals in the vicinity of one end and a storage device disposed in the card body for storing data. A switch on the card is operable to a state to prevent stored data from being erased; and a status signal representing the state of the switch is supplied to one or more of the terminals. The apparatus with which the card is used has mating terminals to receive the status signal. Depending upon the state of that status signal, the apparatus is selectively inhibited from writing data to the memory card or erasing data stored in the memory card.
