    摘要: An extendible bumper system for a vehicle includes a controller system configured to: determine a distance of travel of a first end of a bumper structure using a signal from a position sensor in a first motor, determine a distance of travel of a second end of the bumper structure using a signal from a position sensor in a second motor, and independently adjust at least one of rotational speed and torque output of rotors in the first and second motors in response to the distances of travel. The rotational speed or torque output of the first and second rotors may be independently adjusted in response to a difference in the distances of travel of the first and second ends of the bumper structure, and the rotational speed or torque output of the first and second rotors may be accelerated or decelerated during predetermined distances of travel. A bumper energy absorber for supporting the bumper structure relative to a vehicle includes an inner tube, outer tube, lead screw, nut and motor. Rotation of the lead screw by the rotor causes translation of the nut along the lead screw for driving at least a portion of the bumper structure between extended and retracted positions.

    摘要: A crush control system for controlling the crush of spaced vehicle side composite structural rails in the event of either a full frontal impact or an offset frontal impact includes a crush controller for each side rail. An actuator is provided to move crush initiators between an inoperative position, which will cause an uncontrolled crush of the rail, and a deployed operative position, which will cause a controlled crush of the rail at half the crush force as an uncontrolled crush. In one embodiment each crush controller is normally inoperative and is controlled by a sensor for each located on the opposite side of the vehicle to become operative when the sensor is impacted. The crush initiators may take the form of a radiused wedge or a knife cutter, and the actuator maintains the crush initiators in deployed position to sustain the controlled crush. In another embodiment sensors on both sides control each crush controller which is normally operative, with a circuit logic to cause a crush controller to become inoperative in an offset frontal impact on the same side of the vehicle, while maintaining a crush controller operative in the event of a full frontal impact.

    摘要: A telescoping column includes a first tube and a second tube arranged in telescoping fashion. A locking structure is disposed between a surface formed on the first tube and a ramp disposed on the second tube. The locking structure contacts the ramp at a first elongated area of contact, and the locking structure contacts the surface at a second elongated area of contact. Relative movement of the first and second tubes in response to an impact force applied to one of the first and second tubes causes the locking structure to become wedged between the ramp and the surface, and at least a portion of the impact force between the first and second tubes is transmitted through the first and second elongated areas of contact.

    摘要: A self-locking telescoping device including an outer tube, an inner tube telescoped into the outer tube having a cone-shaped ramp at an inboard end, and a plurality of metal spheres between the ramp and the outer tube. The metal spheres wedge between the ramp and the outer tube when the inner tube is thrust into the outer tube in a collapse direction thereby locking the tubes together. When the thrust is attributable to a severe impact, the spheres plastically deform the outer tube by plowing tracks therein thereby to absorb energy. The self-locking telescoping device further includes an actuator rod, a driver which translates the actuator in the collapse direction and in an expansion direction, a first clutch which translates the inner tube with the actuator rod in the expansion direction, a second clutch which translates the inner tube with the actuator rod in the collapse direction, and a tubular retainer on the actuator rod having a plurality of closed-ended slots around the metal spheres. The closed ends of the slots prevent the spheres from becoming wedged between the ramp and the outer tube when the second clutch translates the inner tube with the actuator rod in the collapse direction.

    摘要: A pinch type control valve uses an elastic sleeve having main flanges at each end of a center pinch section with flange gasket extensions on each end. The flanges of the flange gasket extensions project through metal backing flanges and each cooperates with a machined countersunk annular face groove on such metal backing flanges to pull the flange of the gasket extension radially outwardly as it is compressed. Offset annular beads on the opposite faces of the flange of the gasket extension help in achieving the required radial tensioning regardless of the type of flanging of the system. The annular face groove in the metal flange readily accommodates either flat or raised face pipe flanging. The metal backing flange fits between the main flange and the gasket flange and doesn't require the presence of the valve housing. This enables the sleeve to be tested without complete assembly. The sleeve center section is reinforced from the main flanges through a built up center hat section which forms shoulders substantially abutting but not joined to the root portions of the contiguous main flanges. This provides hinge points for the reinforcement avoiding significant stretch and enabling the center section to be considerably axially shortened. Also disclosed is a method of making the sleeve, the valve, and a method of installing the valve in a pipe system, or sleeve alone for testing.
