    摘要: A mobile telephone system providing general packet radio service (GPRS) includes a radio network controller (RNC) (2A) and/or a base station controller (BSC) and an associated serving GPRS support node (10A) for each domain. The RNCs (2A) and the SGSNs (10A) are interconnected by an Internet protocol (IP) network. When a mobile telephone (6A) moves from one domain to another, the RNC, in the new domain, takes over handling the mobile telephone. The current SGSN (10A) has a detector (20) which detects whether the existing transmission is a real-time transmission and, if it is, a diverter (22) comes into operation to couple the RNC in the new domain to the current SGSN (10A) rather than its associated SGSN (10A). When the call ends, the current SGSN (10A) hands-over the call to the SGSN (10A) in the new domain. This procedure ensures minimal interruption to real-time services by keeping the call anchored to the current SGSN (10A).

    摘要: An improved technique reduces unnecessary routing area updates, while ensuring that the location of a mobile terminal is known when the mobile terminal starts data communication after being in a standby state. Routing area updates are controlled in a packet radio access network architecture having a common routing area controlled by a core network and supported by a first wireless access system and a second wireless access system. The first radio access system provides a mode of operation in which a radio link is maintained between a mobile terminal and the first radio access system after completion of a data transmission. A routing area update takes place if the mobile is located in the second radio access system routing area when the next data transmission is initiated. Additionally, if packet transmission is initiated by the core network, the first radio access system receives a paging request and responsive to receipt of the paging request, the first radio access system pages the core network common routing area.

If no packet transmission is taking place when a mobile terminal moves between the first and second wireless access systems in a common routing area of a packet radio access network, no routing area update takes place. If packet transmission is initiated, no routing area update may be required if the mobile is connected to the same wireless access system as in its previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated, a routing area update may take place if the mobile is connected to a different wireless access system than in the previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated by the mobile, the packet transmission initiation may include the routing area update.
