Vulcanizable rubber compositions are disclosed which contain co-activator of vulcanization which is a polymeric amine, that is, a hydrocarbon polymer with pendent alkyl amine groups. The co-activators impart increased rates of vulcanization with little decrease in scorch delay and very little increase in the modulus of the cured compositions. No increase in heat build-up or decrease in flex-fatigue life is shown. Typical polymers forming the backbone of the co-activators include EPDM rubber and polymers from butadiene or isoprene, with optional co-monomers.

The invention relates to the high temperature mixing of elastomeric material in the presence of a quinone diimine antidegradant and carbon black, prior to vulcanization. By mixing the antidegradant quinone diimine with the elastomer prior to vulcanization, enhanced handling and processing qualities are realized in the vulcanized rubber.

Preferably, the processes include the steps of: combining elastomers or a blend of elastomers, a carbon black and/or silica filler(s) and a quinone diimine antidegradant in a rubber composition; mixing the rubber composition for a viscosity-reducing effective period of time to reduce the viscosity of the composition; and discharging the mixed composition. The compositions are preferably discharged from the mixing vessel at or near a minimum viscosity occurring at a temperature of about 120-160° C.

A vulcanizable elastomeric composition and a method of forming said composition is presented. The method generally comprises the mixing of sulfur and an ultra-accelerator into a mixture of an elastomeric polymer matrix, fillers, and silane coupling agent during the silanization reaction step, prior to the occurrence of vulcanization. The addition of the ultra-accelerator, such as TBzTD, enhances the efficiency of the silanization reaction and forms at least one bond with the elastomeric polymer matrix. The silanization reaction step may comprise multiple mixing substeps in which the ultra-accelerator may be incorporated into the elastomeric composition.
