Abstract: Production of pure 1-nitroanthraquinone from nitroanthraquinone mixtures by treating the mixture in an organic aprotic solvent with a primary or secondary amine or a mixture of the same. A pure 1-nitroanthraquinone in which practically no dinitroanthraquinone or other byproducts can be detected is obtained in a high yield. The 1-aminoanthraquinone obtained from this 1-nitroanthraquinone is suitable for all dye syntheses.

Abstract: A process for the recovery of 1-nitroanthraquinone in a purified state from a nitroanthraquinone mixture containing it by treatment with a base in the presence of an initiator such as nitrite, halide, thiocyanate, alcoholate or phenolate ions in an organic solvent. A 1-nitroanthraquinone is obtained which is essentially pure or contains only small quantities of isomers and dinitroanthraquinones.

Abstract: A method of preparing aromatic ketones by reaction of aromatic compounds with acyl chlorides or acyl anhydrides in the presence of catalytic amounts of an aromatic polynitrosulfonic acid, and new aromatic ketones derived from an aromatic compound (as the acylatable compound) having at least two nuclear substituents, at least one of said substituents being a nitro group. Both the known and the new aromatic ketones obtainable are valuable intermediates for the production of dyes and pesticides.

Abstract: A process for the production of pure 1-nitroanthraquinone from a mixture of nitroanthraquinone by treating the mixture in an organic polar aprotic solvent in the presence of an initiator such as a compound yielding nitrite, halide, thiocyanate, alcoholate or phenolate ions with a compound which has at least one -CH2- group activated by one or more carbonyl groups. 1-NITROANTHRAQUINONE WHICH IS VIRTUALLY PURE OR ONLY CONTAINS VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF ISOMERS AND DINITROANTHRAQUINONES IS OBTAINED IN GOOD TO VERY GOOD YIELDS BY THE PROCESS OF THE INVENTION.
