A surgical tool designed for irrigated microsurgery or pediatric surgery. The tool includes an outer hub that is fixed to a complementary handpiece. An outer tube extends forward from the outer hub. An inner hub is coupled to a drive member integral with the handpiece to rotate in unison with the drive member. An inner tube extends forward from the inner hub and is disposed inside the outer tube. A cutting member is located on the forward end of the inner tube. The inner wall of the outer tube and the adjacent outer wall of the inner tube are in close proximity to each other. Irrigation fluid is introduced between the tubes through an opening in the outer hub. The outer wall of the inner tube is formed with a flat that extends longitudinally along the tube from the section of the inner tube that is subtended by the opening for the irrigation fluid to the distal end at which the cutting assembly is located. The flat defines a channel between the tubes through which the irrigation fluid flows from the opening to the cutting assembly. A suction from the surgical site is drawn through the center of the inner tube and the inner hub.

A cutting blade assembly for use with a handpiece having a motor for rotatably driving the cutting blade assembly. The handpiece has a bore therein for receiving the cutting blade assembly. The cutting blade assembly includes an elongate tubular outer member having a distal end with an opening thereat, a proximal end, a hub unremovably secured to the proximal end so as to be a permanent part of the outer member. The hub is configured to be directly received and engaged in the handpiece bore. An elongate inner member is received in the outer member and has a distal cutting end disposed adjacent the opening in the distal end of the outer member. A proximal end of the inner member is adapted to be received in the handpiece bore and rotatably driven by the motor to rotate the inner member in the outer member. The cutting blade assembly includes the elongate tubular outer member having a radially inwardly facing surface along the length thereof with at least one elongate axially extending groove therein, the groove terminating at both the proximal and distal ends of the outer member. The cutting blade assembly also includes the outer member additionally having an irrigation liquid connection structure and a window through a wall of the outer member for providing liquid communication between the liquid connection structure and the elongate axially extending groove so that liquid will traverse the axial extent of the groove and to the opening. Bearings relatively rotatably support the inner and outer members and the irrigation liquid bypasses the bearings through the groove.

A surgical tool (10) for chucking in a powered surgical handpiece, comprising an outer tubular member (11) with an opening (41) at the distal portion thereof. An inner tubular member (30) is movable in the outer tubular member and comprises a bendable inner tube (36) of flexible polymer material and a tissue working tip (40) extending forward from the distal end of the inner tube. The inner tube has a radially enlarged distal opening recess (62). The tip includes a reduced outside diameter, proximally extending, annular flange fixed within the inner tube distal recess (61). The annular flange of the tip is formed with hills and valleys (63, 64). The inner wall of the inner tube that defines the recess is formed with hills (65) that seat in the valleys of the annular flange so as to lock the tip to the inner tube. The annular flange is further shaped so as to extend into the recess a distance less than the overall length of the recess. Consequently, the inner tube immediately below the end of the annular flange has a section of reduced wall thickness.
