The invention is concerned with new herbicidally active 4-phenoxy-.alpha.-phenoxy-alkanecarboxylic acid derivatives, especially propionic acid esters of the type ##STR1## bearing in the first phenoxy radical a nitro group besides another substituent R.sub.1 which is preferably a halogen atom, the CF.sub.3 group is lower alkyl, alkoxy or alkoxycarbonyl group. The invention is further concerned with herbicidal compositions containing such new derivatives and with methods for the selective control of grass-like weeds in crops of dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous cultivated plants such as cereals.

3-Phenoxy-.alpha.-phenoxy-alkancarboxylic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## are disclosed as possessing a surprising selective herbicidal activity. In the formula, Hal is a halogen atom, m is an integer 1, 2 or 3, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or the cyano group, Z is a halogen atom or the cyano group, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, and R is an acid function. Methods are disclosed for combatting weeds in mono- and dicotyledonous cultures such as cereals, corn, rice, soya and cotton, which comprise applying to the locus to be protected from weeds a dosage of from 0.1 to 10.0 kilograms per hectare of the above compounds.

The present invention relates to novel herbicidally active 4-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-.alpha.-phenoxypropionic acid alkoxyalkyl amides, processes for their manufacture and also herbicidal compositions which contain them. The preferred utility of the novel compounds is the selective control of monocotyledonous weeds.The novel compounds have the general formula I ##STR1## wherein "alkylene" represents a straight or branched saturated hydrocarbon chain of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R represents an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.The novel compounds are obtained by reacting a halide or lower alkyl ester of 4-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-.alpha.-phenoxypropionic acid with an alkoxyalkyl amineH.sub.2 N-alkylene-O-Ror by reacting a hydroxydiphenyl ether ##STR2## wherein Y is hydrogen or a cation, with an .alpha.-halopropionic acid alkoxyalkyl amide of the formula ##STR3## in the presence of an acid acceptor. Preferred compounds of the formula I are an N-(2-methoxy)-ethylamide and N-(3-methoxy)-propyl-(2)-amide.

The present invention provides a novel herbicidally active ester, namely the cyanomethyl ester of 4-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-.alpha.-phenoxypropionic acid of the formula ##STR1## It is a further object of the invention to provide a herbicidal composition which contains this novel ester as active component and also a post-emergence method of selectively controlling monocotyledonous weeds in crops of dicotyledonous plants. The invention furthermore provides a process for the manufacture of the novel ester by methods which are known per se by reaction of a corresponding trifluoromethyl-phenoxy-.alpha.-phenoxypropionic acid halide with hydroxyacetonitrile (cyanomethanol) or by reaction of 4-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-phenol with a .alpha.-halopropionic acid cyanomethyl ester.
