Abstract: A cylinder head includes a cylinder head casting having a top deck and a bottom deck, and a coolant cavity. The cylinder head also includes an igniter column including an upper section, and a necked-down lower section extending upwardly from the bottom deck. The igniter column includes an inner surface forming an igniter bore such as for a sparkplug, and an outer heat-dissipation surface. The outer heat-dissipation surface is exposed in circumferential uniformity to the coolant cavity and extends radially inwardly of the inner surface at locations axially between an igniter seat and a bottom deck cavity surface. In some embodiments, a cylinder head includes an enclosed as-cast cooling channel axially between an igniter seat and a bottom deck combustion surface.

Abstract: A head gasket is provided for use in an engine having a cylinder head and a cylinder liner with a side wall defining a combustion chamber, the cylinder liner including a liner flange projecting from the side wall in an outward direction away from the combustion chamber. The head gasket includes a main body layer and a flange layer coupled to the main body layer by a flange wrap portion. The flange wrap portion is sized for axial alignment with the side wall of the cylinder liner, and the flange layer is spaced from the main body layer to define a gap between the main body layer and the flange layer adjacent the flange wrap portion. A core layer is coupled to the main body layer and includes a sealing bead spaced outwardly from the flange wrap portion and sized for axial alignment with the liner flange.

Abstract: A liner for a cylinder of an internal combustion engine can comprise a hollow cylindrical wall or body having an inner surface, an outer surface opposite the inner surface, and open top and bottom ends. The outer surface can be without any sealing grooves in at least a bottom portion thereof. A relatively thin portion of the wall or body can be provided below a thick portion of the wall or body, and may reach the bottom end of the wall or body. An angled transition can define a change in thickness from the thick portion to the thin portion.

Abstract: Tool for installing O-rings in an inner diameter of a structure includes a plurality of held in a spaced, fixed parallel relationship to one another. A plurality of guide surfaces are secured with and disposed between the plates. A selectively-actuable finger actuator is disposed to move a plurality of fingers generally radially between the plurality of plates. Each of the plates includes a slot, and a loading pin is configured to be received within the slots. When at least one O-ring is disposed about a plurality of guide surfaces proximal the periphery of the plates, and the loading pin is moved within the slots, the loading pin pulls a loop of the O-rings toward the plate axis. When the loading pin is removed, the finger actuator may be actuated to move the fingers in the generally radial direction to move the at least one O-ring radially outward from the plates.

Abstract: A method to operate a dual-nozzle fuel injector is provided. The dual-nozzle fuel injector includes a first control valve, a second control valve, a first control chamber, a second control chamber, a drain, a first needle check, a second needle check, a first nozzle outlet, a second nozzle outlet, and a dual solenoid actuator. The dual solenoid actuator selectively actuates the first control valve and the second control valve to connect the first control chamber and the second control chamber, respectively, to the drain. Flow of a liquid fuel from the first control chamber and the second control chamber, respectively, lifts the first needle check and the second needle check. The first needle check lifts to deliver a first pre-determined amount of the liquid fuel into the cylinder. The second needle check lifts to deliver a second pre-determined amount of the liquid fuel into the cylinder.
