Abstract: A method for refining a bio-based crude ethylene glycol, the method comprising: using a bio-based crude ethylene glycol as a raw material, diluting same with water to an ethylene glycol concentration of 1-95 weight %; under the conditions of the temperature being 0-100° C. and the volume space velocity being 0.01-20 BV/hr, continuously passing the diluted ethylene glycol aqueous solution through an adsorption bed, which is filled with one or more macroporous adsorption resins and an optional ion exchange resin, for an adsorption treatment so as to obtain a purified ethylene glycol aqueous solution; and then dehydrating same to obtain ethylene glycol.

In this process, C5-C20 oleophilic alcohol compounds, C5-C20 alkanes and/or C4-C20 oleophilic ketone compounds are subjected to azeotropism as an azeotropic solvent together with the bio-based propylene glycol to obtain an azeotrope containing propylene glycol. Then the azeotropic solvent in the azeotrope is separated to obtain a crude propylene glycol which is further purified to obtain propylene glycol.

Abstract: The invention provides a process for refining non-petroleum based ethylene glycol, wherein impurities having a boiling point close to that of ethylene glycol are separated. In the process, C5-C20 oleophilic alcohol compounds, C5-C20 alkanes and/or C4-C20 oleophilic ketone compounds are subjected to azeotropism as an azeotropic agent together with the non-petroleum based ethylene glycol to obtain an azeotrope containing ethylene glycol. Then the azeotropic agent in the azeotrope is separated and removed to obtain an ethylene glycol crude product which is further purified to obtain ethylene glycol.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for increasing the UV transmittance of ethylene glycol. The method uses an ethylene glycol solution and hydrogen as raw materials, and uses an alloy catalyst comprising nickel, one or more rare-earth elements, tin, and aluminum, the contents thereof in parts by weight being 10-90, 1-5, 1-60, and 5-9, respectively. The method of the present invention uses an inexpensive, stable-in-aqueous-phase, carrier-free alloy as a catalyst, and continuously adds hydrogen to reduce unsaturated impurities in ethylene glycol. In application of the method of the present invention in continuous industrial-scale production, the use of this type of alloy catalyst could be especially significant for the achievement of long-term system stability and control of production costs.
