    摘要: A rotary drag bit suitable for directional drilling. The bit includes a bit body from which extend radially-oriented blades carrying PDC cutters. The blades extend to primary gage pads, above which secondary gage pads are either longitudinally spaced or rotationally spaced, or both, defining a gap or discontinuity between the primary and secondary gage pads through which drilling fluid from adjacent junk slots may communicate laterally or circumferentially. Longitudinally leading edges of the secondary gage pads carry cutters for smoothing the sidewall of the borehole. The cutters are preferably configured and oriented so as to provide a relatively aggressive cutting edge to the formation in both longitudinal and rotational directions of bit movement, the cutting edges lying adjacent cutting surfaces preferably disposed at negative rake angles to the formation material of the borehole wall for enhanced durability. Cutters may likewise be disposed on the trailing ends of the secondary gage pads to provide an up-drill capability to facilitate removal of the bit from the borehole. The tandem primary and secondary gage pads provide enhanced bit stability and reduced side cutting tendencies. The discontinuities between the primary and secondary gage pads enhance fluid flow from the bit face to the borehole annulus above the bit, promoting formation cuttings removal. The tandem gage arrangement also has utility in conventional bits not designed specifically for directional drilling.

The tubular components include one or more straight pipes and one or more bent segments connected at interfaces. The system includes a plurality of electronically readable identifiers, each electronically readable identifier being disposed in proximity to one of the interfaces of two of the tubular components and each side of the interface comprising at least one RFID chip. The system also includes a reader to receive a signal from each of the plurality of electronically readable identifiers in turn and a processor to process a position of the reader and each of the signals to generate the three-dimensional mapping.

    摘要: A roller cone bit may be used as a rotating drag bit by treating the roller cones as carriers for a plurality of distinguishable types of drag cutters. The roller cones are each coupled to a mechanism which selectively allows rotation of the roller cones. The roller cones are otherwise fixed and as the bit is rotated, the drag cutters are brought into engagement with the rock. However, where the roller cones are selectively allowed to rotate, rotation of the drag bit rotates the roller cones to bring a second set of drag cutters into a configuration for cutting the rock formation. A mechanism then selectively locks the roller cones to prevent further rotation, keeping the second set of drag cutters fixed in place. By selectively permitting and preventing rotation of the roller cones, a plurality of sets of drag cutters can be brought into a configuration for cutting the rock. Such a drag bit may be employed to bring drag cutters selectively into play to cut different types of rock formation, or to present renewed cutters after an initial set of cutters have been worn by a predetermined degree. Furthermore, rotation of the roller cones may be slowed by application of a drag to each roller cone. The drag cutters on each roller cone will be sequentially brought into a cutting configuration with respect to the rock and wear will be evenly distributed among the drag cutters.

    摘要: A base powder mixture consisting of diamond material and solid support is inserted into the recess of a mold block for the manufacture of cutting elements for, in particular, deep drill bits, the mold block is then externally hermetically enclosed and hot isostatically pressed. The base powder mixture is, first of all, inserted directly into the recess, the mold block is then enclosed as a whole in a capsule and placed in a high pressure furnace in which pressure is applied to the mold block by a liquid or gaseous pressure medium and, finally, after cooling and lowering of the pressure, the capsule is removed and the finished cutting elements are taken out of the recess.
