摘要: A method of detecting an analyte is described in which an up-converting luminescent species that is excited by absorption of long wavelength light is provided as a donor of energy to an acceptor species that can be bound to, or generated in proximity to, the luminescent species. The analyte either alters the proximity between the luminescent species and the acceptor species or alters the absorbance or luminescence properties of the acceptor species. The luminescent energy donor is excited with long wavelength light and transfers up-converted energy to the proximate acceptor species and this transfer of energy is detected by measurement of appropriate luminescence properties of either the donor or of the acceptor or both.

摘要: An apparatus for cleaning the specimen and interior specimen chamber of Transmission Electron Microscopes, and similar electron- or charged-particle-beam instruments consisting of a plasma cleaning device mounted on a hollow rod that replaces the stage through the air lock of the instrument by being the same shape and size as the stage support rod. The plasma cleaning device is a small hollow cathode that is excited by RF power. Air or other oxygen containing mixtures is admitted to the plasma through the hollow rod at a pressure below 1 Torr. The plasma creates oxygen radicals from the oxygen containing gas. The oxygen radicals oxidize the hydrocarbons contamination and convert them to easily pumped gases. The apparatus can be attached to the electron microscope whenever cleaning is needed, and then is easily removed to return the instrument to its analytical function.

摘要: Apparatus for producing decay time weighted information (e.g. a decay time weighted image) of a luminescent sample, comprises an excitation light source arranged to illuminate the sample, means for modulating or pulsing the intensity of the excitation light in a predetermined cyclical manner, detector means for detecting photons emitted by the sample as a result of luminescence, means for storing data representative of detected photons, the stored data being weighted as a function of phase difference between detection of photons and the cyclically varying modulation, and means for producing decay time weighted information from the stored data.
