This invention provides a thickened aqueous hard surface abrasive scouring cleanser having improved cleaning efficacy due to the presence of an organic solvent in the composition. It has surprisingly been found that an organic solvent can be included in an abrasive, surfactant, electrolyte/buffer, soap and colloidal alumina thickened composition without causing the system to become unstable. The abrasive cleanser of this invention has a smoothly flowable or plastic, preferably pourable, consistency and has stable abrasive-suspension characteristics over long periods of time.

The present invention discloses various embodiments and examples of a thickened aqueous abrasive cleanser capable of maintaining a smoothly flowable or plastic consistency over long periods of time. The cleanser is characterized by the ability to stably suspend abrasives while exhibiting excellent shelf stability over long periods of time with substantially no syneresis and being suitable for use where environmental requirements prevent the use of phosphates. This cleaner has the following ingredients:(a) a colloidal alumina thickener having an average particle size, in dispersion, of no more than about one micron;(b) an electrolyte/buffer;(c) a surfactant system including two surfactant components, one surfactant component comprising a fatty acid anionic surfactant, the other surfactant component comprising a selected bleach-stable surfactant or mixed surfactant;(d) a bleach; and(e) a particulate abrasive having an average particle size of about one to as much as 400 microns to provide scouring action.Methods of use and preparation for the cleansers of the present invention are also set forth.

This invention provides a thickened aqueous hard surface cleaner composition comprising colloidal alumina as the thickener in an aqueous cleaner which comprises a surfactant, electrolyte/buffer, soap and organic solvent system. These cleaner composition systems, which are the fluent, all-purpose type of cleaners, have surprising properties when thickened with the colloidal alumina. Such cleaners when thickened with colloidal alumina have a smoothly flowable or plastic consistency, and in their most preferred form, are pourable at room temperature, which consistency is not thixotropic in nature.

A thickened liquid bleach composition and methods of use and manufacture are disclosed wherein the hypochlorite bleach composition includes about 0.1-10% by weight hypochlorite and is thickened by a thickening component including a cross-linked polyacrylate polymer in an amount effective for thickening the composition, effectively reducing bleach odor when the composition is dispensed onto a surface to be cleaned and also maintaining stability of the composition, the cross-linked polyacrylate polymer preferably forming about 0.2-2.0% by weight and more preferably about 0.4-0.8% by weight of the composition, the composition also including a stabilizer for the cross-linked polyacrylate polymer. The composition is adapted for being directed onto hard surfaces to be cleaned. The composition preferably exhibits shear sensitivity or plasticity facilitating its use in the spray-type dispenser.
