Timed-release bleaching compounds containing encapsulated hypochlorite bleaching agents are disclosed, along with a method for using the compounds. A preferred embodiment of the invention includes sodium silicate-coated lithium hypochlorite. One or more additional coatings to further delay timed release are optional. The novel bleach compounds are especially useful in reducing fabric and dye damage in fabric bleaching while facilitating the inclusion of optional laundry additives such a enzymes and brighteners. The encapsulates have good shelf stability and are effective over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations.

Aqueous cleaning compositions and methods of use are disclosed with a thickening agent including an alkyl ether sulfate surfactant forming about 0.1 to about 10% by wt. of the composition, about 0.1-5.0% by wt. of a cothickening surfactant comprising an alkali metal fatty acid sulfate and/or an alkoxylated alkylphenol sulfate salt, a solvent selected from the class consisting of terpene derivatives including a functional group and tertiary alcohols forming about 0.01 to about 10% by wt. of the composition and an electrolyte component in an amount effective for enhancing thickening effects of the alkyl ether sulfate surfactant and solvent. The electrolyte component preferably includes an alkali metal hypochlorite, more preferably at least one additional multivalent electrolyte, and most preferably sodium carbonate. With the electrolyte component including a hypochlorite, additional electrolytes and the solvent are selected to be bleach stable, the solvent also preferably being a fragrance for the composition.

This invention provides a thickened aqueous hard surface abrasive scouring cleanser having improved cleaning efficacy due to the presence of an organic solvent in the composition. It has surprisingly been found that an organic solvent can be included in an abrasive, surfactant, electrolyte/buffer, soap and colloidal alumina thickened composition without causing the system to become unstable. The abrasive cleanser of this invention has a smoothly flowable or plastic, preferably pourable, consistency and has stable abrasive-suspension characteristics over long periods of time.

A wash additive combination is provided which is loaded into a washing machine at the start of a wash cycle, and which releases a wash additive, such as a fabric softener, into the rinse solution. The combination comprises a wash additive packet of a foam substrate material having a first and a second stable conformation of differing surface area, and a wash additive deposited thereon. A dispenser is provided for mounting atop a washing machine agitator, and into which the packet may be releasably placed, after arranging the packet in its lesser surface area conformation. The packet is retained by the dispenser during initial phases of the wash cycle, and ejected during the spin phase, whereupon it regains its greater surface area conformation for rapid and complete dispersion of active. Embodiments are provided for dual, sequential release of active in the rinse and the dryer.
