摘要: Abrasive machining apparatuses and methods of finishing glass articles with abrasive machining apparatuses are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, an abrasive machining apparatus includes a support base, an edge finishing unit, and an edge finishing unit position sensor. The edge finishing unit includes an abrasive machining spindle having an abrasive wheel that is coupled to a motor and a pivot mechanism that is coupled to the support base. The pivot mechanism has an axis about which the abrasive machining spindle pivots. The abrasive machining spindle is pivotable between an extended position and a retracted position. The actuator is coupled to the edge finishing unit and to the support base and selectively positions the abrasive machining spindle about the axis. The edge finishing unit position sensor is coupled to the support base and is oriented to detect a position of the abrasive machining spindle.

摘要: A method for finishing an edge of a glass sheet comprises grinding the edge of the glass sheet with a grinding wheel. The glass sheet includes a first major surface, a second major surface substantially parallel to the first major surface, and the edge connecting the first and second major surfaces. The grinding produces a central edge portion and two chamfered edge portions connecting the central edge portion with the first and second major surfaces, respectively. The method further comprises polishing the central edge portion with at least one cup wheel rotated about a first axis substantially parallel with the first and second major surfaces of the glass sheet to polish the central edge portion, wherein an abrasive layer of the cup wheel comprises at least one of ferric oxide (Fe2O3), silicon carbide (SiC), and ceric oxide (CeO2).

摘要: A method of finishing glass sheets includes forming a stack comprising alternating layers of unfinished glass sheets and spacer pads. The stack is such that there is no physical contact between any two adjacent unfinished glass sheets and outer edges of the spacer pads are recessed relative to outer edges of the unfinished glass sheets. The stack is secured by clamping the unfinished glass sheets and spacer pads together and then supported on a working surface. The unfinished glass sheets of the stack are finished simultaneously while the stack is supported on the working surface. After the finishing, the stack comprises alternating layers of finished glass sheets and spacer pads.
