    Abstract: A power supply architecture for USB Type-C controllers is described herein. In an example embodiment, an integrated circuit (IC) controller comprises a VCONN pin, a power rail coupled to internal circuits of the IC controller, and a VCONN switch coupled between the VCONN pin and the power rail. The VCONN switch comprises: a drain-extended n-type field effect transistor (DENFET) coupled between the VCONN pin and the power rail; a pump switch coupled to a gate of the DENFET; a resistor coupled between the VCONN pin and the gate of the DENFET; and a diode clamp coupled between the gate of the DENFET and ground.

    Abstract: Techniques for low-power implementation of a Universal Serial Bus (USB) Type-C connector subsystem are described herein. In an example embodiment, an integrated circuit (IC) chip device comprises a Universal Serial Bus (USB) Type-C subsystem. The Type-C subsystem is configured to operate an Ra termination circuit that consumes no more than 100 μA of current after the Ra termination circuit is applied to a Vconn line of the Type-C subsystem, and/or to operate one or more standby reference circuits in a deep-sleep state of the device to perform detection on a Configuration Channel (CC) line of the Type-C subsystem, where the device consumes no more than 100 μA of current in the deep-sleep state.

    Abstract: Example apparatus, systems, and methods receive, by a current digital-to-analog converter (DAC) of a shunt regulator, a first digital code indicative of a first programmable power supply command specifying a first programmable output voltage (Vbus) to be delivered to a voltage bus of a USB-compatible device. The programmable power supply command is compatible with a universal serial bus—power delivery (USB-PD) standard. Responsive to receipt of the first digital code, adjust, by the current DAC, a sink current delivered to a feedback node to adjust an output voltage to the first Vbus for dynamic programmability. The feedback node is coupled to a first input of an amplifier of the shunt regulator and the first Vbus is programmable.

    Abstract: A system includes a transformer having an auxiliary coil to provide a flyback voltage to a primary side of an alternating current to direct current (AC-DC) converter. A primary side controller includes an auxiliary pin coupled to the transformer and to an external capacitor, the auxiliary pin to receive the flyback voltage after startup. a junction gate field-effect transistor (JFET) coupled to a supply voltage. A first FET is coupled in series between the JFET and the auxiliary pin, the JFET to charge the external capacitor from the supply voltage during startup. One or more depletion region diodes are coupled to a gate of the first FET, the one or more depletion region diodes to bias a voltage of the gate of the first FET to a specific voltage.

    Abstract: A device and method that includes a shunt regulator of a universal serial bus (USB) compatible power supply device is disclosed. The shunt regulator includes an amplifier with an output, a first input, and a second input. The shunt regulator also includes a current digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that is coupled to the first input of the amplifier and a voltage bus node. The current DAC adjusts a sink or a source current delivered at the first input of the amplifier to regulate a programmable output voltage (Vbus) in the USB-compatible power supply device. The current delivered by the DAC is responsive to receipt of a digital code indicative of a programmable power supply command specifying the Vbus to be delivered by the USB-compatible power supply device on the voltage bus node.
