Abstract: 575,827. Clarifying foul liquids. TRIGGS, W. W. (Dorr Co.) Aug. 23, 1944, No. 16091. [Classes 46 and 111] Apparatus for the clarification of polluted liquids comprises a tank having partitioning means the lower edge of which is spaced from the bottom of the tank, so that the tank is divided into two communicating compartments, each compartment having means for the supply and withdrawal of liquid, means being provided for delivering into the second compartment liquid that has been withdrawn from the first compartment and submitted to an additional treatment, and means being provided for withdrawing sediment from the bottom of the tank. In the construction indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, a tank 10 is divided into two compartments 22, 23 by a partition 19 which terminates above the bottom of the tank to leave a space for passage of an endless conveyer 40 provided with scrapers 47 for delivering sediment to a sump 13. Liquid to be treated enters compartment 22 by a feed pipe 6 and is distributed by a launder 25 and baffle 26. At the other end of the compartment is a launder 32 from which liquid flows through pipe 73 to a biologic trickling filter 70. Liquid also flows to the filter through pipe 75 from the outlet'37 of the compartment 23. The filtered liquid is pumped through pipe 82 and valve-controlled pipes 83,84 to the feed pipe 6 and to a launder 30 of the compartment 23. Scum is removed through a slotted trough 58 provided with an adjusting handle 60. In a modification the filter is above the level of the top of the tank and the pump supplies the liquid to the filter. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which two filters are used. Liquid from launder 30 is led by a pipe 106 to a well 107 from which it is pumped through pipes 108, 110 to a filter 100. The filtered liquid flows through pipes 101, 102, 103, pipe 103 communicating through pipe 104 with a well 105 from which liquid is pumped to the filter 120. The filtered liquid flows to launder 32. The quantity of liquid supplied to the launder 32 may be larger than that overflowing past the weir 36 whereby a back flow of liquid occurs along the bottom of the tank from compartment 23 to compartment 22, and this facilitates the work of the scrapers 47 on the endless conveyer 40.

Abstract: 514,143. Gravity-separation apparatus. DORR CO., Inc. Dec. 8, 1938, No. 35803. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1937. [Class 111] Apparatus for clarifying liquids comprises a tank to which liquid is fed and from which clarified liquid and sediment are discharged, the tank having a flocculation zone with movable-bladed paddle means and a communicating sedimentation zone provided with means for displacing settled solids towards a discharge, and a horizontal partition divides the tank into communicating upper and lower sections and is substantially co-extensive with the sedimentation zone. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a tank 10 is provided at one end with vertical baffles 23, 24, 25 forming spaces 22 below which are located flocculating blades 26 adapted to rotate about horizontal axes. Towards the other end of the tank there are provided endless chains 34 carrying blades 40 which are adapted to scrape sludge from the part 16 of the base of the tank and from a tray 21, and to deliver it to a sump 17. The effluent liquid flows through slots 45 in the sides of the tank and also through perforated pipes 56 communicating with a pipe 55, and is discharged through a pipe 54. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the flocculation zone is situated above the sedimentation zone, being separated therefrom by a horizontal partition 62. This arrangement is modified in a further construction, by the positions of the sedimentation zone and flocculation zone being reversed. Specifications 407,807 and 457,756 are referred to.
