Abstract: A molding compound is made by heat-softening, fusing and compressing strips of unidirectionally aligned filaments embedded in a thermosetting resin. The thermosetting resin is non-tacky at room temperature, which allows for easy handling, elimination of cold storage and the use of robotic manufacturing methods. Composites made by molding the molding compound have excellent, highly isotropic tensile properties.

Abstract: Fiber reinforced composites are made by infusing a mass of reinforcing fibers with a resin composition (11). A thin sheet (6) of nano-sized monofilaments (7) is applied on at least one major surface of a fiber mass. The resin composition (11) is subsequently hardened to form the composite. This method produces a composite having a very smooth surface. Printout of the reinforcing fiber is greatly reduced without the need to mask it through the application of thick coatings or additional layers of material.

Abstract: Multilayer prepregs are formed by stacking layers of unidirectional prepregs in which continuous reinforcing fibers are aligned in a single direction. The unidirectional prepregs are made by impregnating aligned tows of a reinforcing fiber with a solid thermosetting resin that softens at a temperature below its cure temperature. The layers of the stack are bonded together by softening and then re-cooling the resin portion of the individual prepreg layers. The multilayer prepreg is then molded and cured to form a composite part.

Abstract: The present invention provides thermosetting resin pre-impregnated or infused fiber materials or prepregs comprising a fiber material of a heat resistant fiber, such as a continuous fiber material or a discontinuous chopped fiber mat, infused with a thermosetting resin mixture comprising (i) at least one liquid epoxy resin; (ii) at least one epoxy novolac resin, (iii) dicyandiamide and (iv) and an adduct of a cycloaliphatic amine and a liquid epoxy resin, wherein the dicyandiamide is dissolved in the adduct of a cycloaliphatic amine and a liquid epoxy resin. The prepreg or fiber material has a shelf life of at least 30 days at ambient temperature and pressure before its Initial Tg (DSC) rises above 40° C.

Abstract: Method for recycling scrap that contains one or more heat resistant fibers and from 25 to 60 wt. %, based on the total weight of the scrap, of an at least partially uncured to fully uncured two component thermosetting resin mixture of (i) one or more thermosetting resins, and (ii) a solid hardener, the methods comprising shredding the scrap to an average size of from 3 to 50 mm, mixing the shredded scrap, preferably after preheating the scrap, to provide a fluid material charge and then compression molding the fluid material charge to make a cured composite material.
