Abstract: A cosmetically altered fiberglass piece having an outer layer of curable gel-coat, an intermediate layer of textile fabric having a graphical element depicted thereon, and an inner layer of composite. A resin or epoxy is used to bond the layers to form the cosmetically altered fiberglass piece. Introduction of resin or epoxy is performed through one of a manual application, a vacuum infusion, or light RTM.

Abstract: According to one implementation, a preform shaping method for producing a preform having a web, a flange, and a chamfered portion includes: pressing a first portion of a laminated body of fiber sheets by sandwiching the first portion between a first mold and a second mold; and pressing a second portion of the laminated body of the fiber sheets after pressing the first portion. The first portion corresponds to the web. The second portion corresponds to the flange. The first mold fits a surface in one side of the web, an inner surface of the chamfered portion and a surface in one side of the flange. The second mold fits a surface in the other side of the web. The second portion is pressed by sandwiching the second portion between the first mold and a third mold.

Abstract: A cutting tool includes a steel gear-shaped cutter which has cutting edges for die-cutting a fiber mat into a predetermined gear shape. The cutting edges include tooth-top, tooth-bottom and tooth-surface cutting edges, and. The cutter has an inclined cylindrical exterior shape so that its thickness gradually increases from the cutting edges toward the base end. V-shaped grooves are formed on the exterior surface and become shallower from the cutting edge toward the base end. The wedge angle (α1) of the tooth-bottom line from the tooth-bottom cutting edge to the base end is greater than the wedge angle (α2) of the tooth-top cutting edge surface from the tooth-top cutting edges to the base end. The thickness (W1) of the tooth-bottom cutting edge is greater than the thickness (W2) of the tooth-top cutting edge on the base-side end.

Abstract: A process for the production of fiber composite hollow SMC components is provided. In the process an SMC-suitable semi-finished fiber composite material is arranged over or around a wash-removable salt core system. The semi-finished fiber composite material and core system are arranged in an SMC mold, followed by molding of an SMC component incorporating the semi-finished fiber composite material and core system. The wash-removable salt may then be removed by washing to result in an SMC component containing a hollow region.

Abstract: A method is provided for producing an SMC component provided with a unidirectional fiber reinforced. The method includes: a) a blank of a unidirectional fiber reinforced is laid on the tool surface of a lower part of a preform tool, b) the preform tool is closed by moving a preform upper part and the preform lower part of the preform tool towards each other, thus forming the unidirectional fiber reinforced; c) the unidirectional fiber reinforced is pre-cured in the preform tool by heating; d) the removed unidirectional fiber reinforced together with at least one nondirectional SMC semi-finished product are laid in a press tool, onto the tool surface of a press tool lower part; e) the press tool is closed, wherein a press tool upper part and the press tool lower part of the press tool are moved towards each other to mold together the unidirectional fiber reinforced and the at least one non-directional SMC semi-finished product; and f) the produced SMC component is fully cured by heating.

Abstract: A vehicle component is provided that includes a first cured layer of a molding composition having a predominant fiber filler chopped glass fibers, a second cured layer of molding composition having a predominant fiber filler chopped carbon fibers, and a bonding agent with elongation properties configured to accommodate the differential coefficients of linear thermal expansion between the first cured layer and the second cured layer. The second cured layer is substantially devoid of glass fiber. The bonding agent is an elastomeric adhesive, which is operative from −40 to 205° C. The first cured layer forms an outer skin layer surface of a vehicle and the second cured layer forms an interior layer, where the outer skin layer surface has a class-A finish.

Abstract: A method of forming a molding mat formed bundles of reinforcing fibers and bonding materials is provided. The reinforcing fibers are preferably wet use chopped strand glass fibers (WUCS). The bonding materials may be any thermosetting material having a melting point less than the reinforcing fiber. The molding mat may be formed by partially opening the wet use chopped strand glass fibers and filamentizing the bonding materials, blending the reinforcement and bonding fibers, forming the reinforcement and bonding fibers into a sheet, and bonding the sheet. During bonding, the sheet is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the bonding fibers but below the temperature of the glass fibers. The molding mat thus formed may be used as a reinforcement material in sheet molding compounds.

Abstract: A conformable veil is formed by impregnating a random mat of glass fibers formed with a polystyrene-based resin. The veil is then introduced between two layers of a sheet molding compound resin paste and compacted to form a compacted sheet. The compacted sheet is then introduced to a mold and molded to form a soft, flexible sheet molding composite part having good resin and fiber distribution. Resin and fiber distribution of the present invention is improved because the polystyrene-based resin is soluble in the sheet molding compound resin paste and allows the plurality of fibers to flow freely within the resin paste during the molding process.

The fibrous material is introduced as a veil layer adjacent a paste layer, the veil flows well during the molding process.
