The invention provides an economic process for the manufacture of 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze) by a two stage process. A vapor phase hydrofluorination of 1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HCFC-1233zd) into 1-chloro-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropane (HCFC-244fa) and/or 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa) is conducted, followed by the thermal dehydrochlorination of HCFC-244fa and dehydro fluorination of HFC-245fa into HFO-1234ze in the presence of a catalyst which comprises one or more of alkali metal halides, alkaline earth metal halides, halogenated metal oxides, zero oxidation state metals, zinc halides, palladium halides, and activated carbon.

A process for the production of difluoromethane (HFC-32), 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HFC-143a) and 1,1-difluoroethane (HFC-152a). In the process the following steps are employed: (a) providing a reaction vessel, (b) providing in the reaction vessel activated carbon impregnated with a strong Lewis acid fluorination catalys selected from halides of As, Sb, Al, Tl, In, V, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr and Hf, (c) activating the catalyst by passing through the activated carbon impregnated with a strong Lewis acid fluorination catalyst anhydrous hydrogen fluoride gas and chlorine gas, (d) contacting, in a vapor state in the reaction vessel containing the activated catalyst, hydrogen fluoride and one or more halogenated hydrocarbons selected from chlorofluoromethane, dichloromethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, vinyl chloride, 1,1-dichloroethylene, 1,2-dichloroethylene, 1,2-dichloroethane, and 1,1-dichloroethane for a time and at a temperature to produce a product stream comprising hydrofluorocarbon product(s) corresponding to the chlorinated hydrocarbon reactant(s), and one or more of hydrogen chloride, unreactacted chlorinated hydrocarbon reactant(s), under-fluorinated intermediates, and unreacted hydrogen fluoride, and (e) separating the hydrofluorocarbon product(s) from the product stream.

A continuous, vapor phase method for purifying a crude mixture of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane and one or more unsaturated fluorocarbon compounds, the process comprising: a) providing a photochlorinator vessel comprising 1) a UV lamp unit comprising a UV lamp located in a transparent inner well, the transparent inner well being located within a transparent outer well, the outer well being provided with material for cooling walls of the inner and outer wells; the inner well and the outer well defining separate chambers isolated from each other; and 2) a reaction vessel into which the UV lamp unit has been inserted; b) introducing into the reaction vessel a gaseous mixture of Cl2 and a distillation inseparable mixture of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane and one or more unsaturated fluorocarbon compounds; c) reacting, in the gaseous state and in the presence of UV light from the photochlorinator, the mixture with Cl2 with the distillation inseparable mixture of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane and one or more unsaturated compounds to saturate unsaturated fluorocarbons into a reacted mixture, and d) separating a purified 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane product containing less than 1000 ppm, most preferably less than 100 ppm unsaturated fluorocarbons.
