摘要: The present invention provides a tracking system in which a mobile tag having an unknown position, which tag is to be tracked in space over time, transmits a signal comprising a pair of tones at different frequencies. The transmitted signal is received at each of three receivers, each having a known location, where the phase of each of the tones within the signal is measured. The measured phases are passed to a processing unit which determines the position of the tag at the time of transmission of the signal on the basis of the difference between the measured phases of the two tones. The tracking system operates over a defined finite range to track the position of the mobile tag uniquely in space.

摘要: A method of and system for calibrating un-calibrated time information within a mobile terminal 101 is disclosed. The terminal has a receiver 203 capable of receiving signals from which calibrated time information carried by a calibrated system (a satellite positioning system) can be extracted, and a receiver 200 capable of receiving signals from which un-calibrated time information carried by an un-calibrated stable system (a cellular communications system) may be extracted. The time offset between calibrated time information extracted from the calibrated system and un-calibrated time information extracted from the un-calibrated stable system is determined at a first terminal position where the signals from the un-calibrated stable system are available, the travel times of the signals from the un-calibrated stable system are known or determined, and the signals from the calibrated system are available. The un-calibrated time information extracted from signals of the un-calibrated stable system received at a second terminal position is calibrated from known or determined travel times of the signals from the un-calibrated stable system at the second terminal position and the time offset which has been determined.

摘要: The invention provides a method of estimating the time offsets between signals transmitted by plural transmitters of a communications network and received by a receiver attached to a terminal. In the method a section of a representation of the signals from the plural transmitters received by the receiver at the terminal (a “terminal section”) is created as are a first section of a representation of the signal transmitted by a first of said transmitters and a second section of a representation of the signal transmitted by a second of said transmitters. Each of the first and second sections overlaps in time with the terminal section. Using the first section, the second section and a set of signal parameters, including initial estimates of the time offsets between the first section and the terminal section and between the second section and the terminal section, a model of a section of a representation of the composite signal received by the receiver from the first and second transmitters is created. Thereafter, the model is compared with the terminal section and the set of signal parameters including the time offset estimates is refined to minimise the difference between the model and the terminal section. The time offsets in the refined parameter set used to minimise the difference between said model and the terminal section, are adopted as the estimated time offsets between the first section and the terminal section and between the second section and the terminal section.

摘要: The invention provides a method of combining satellite positioning system signals and position information derived from such signals in a mobile terminal, when these are available at a first location, with cellular communication signals and a method, system and apparatus for determining the approximate position information for the said mobile terminal when SPS signals are not available at a second location. The approximate position is determined in the mobile terminal only using a position difference vector derived from the cellular communication signals using time offsets and associated time-tags in a method based on the observed time difference of arrival. The computations of cellular position and position difference information are made within the network infrastructure. The invention provides for the security of the user as only position difference information is communicated over the air interface, or transmission time offset measurements which require non-transmitted information to determine a solution. In a further aspect of the invention, the approximate position information is used to provide position assistance information to an SPS receiver for the purposes of (a) satellite signal acquisition with reduced search time and/or (b) initial position information for the calculation of SPS location which thereby avoids the ‘integer ambiguity’ problem resulting from the repetitive nature of the SPS ranging signals.

摘要: The present invention sets out to overcome the hearability problem in CDMA communications networks in which positioning services are provided, by using a separate sampling device (204, 205, 206) for each transmitter (201, 202, 203), which sends to the computing device (208) a representation of the signals transmitted only by that transmitter. A cross-correlation of the representation sent back by the mobile terminal (207) with the representation sent back by the sampling device in the brightest transmitter is performed in the computing device (208), and a blurred estimate of that brightest signal is subtracted from a blurred version of the representation sent back by the mobile terminal (207) in order to reduce its effect on the remaining signals as far as possible. The cross-correlation and subtraction steps are iterated until no useful signals remain to be extracted.
