    Abstract: An example release mechanism for an ejection jack includes a locking mechanism disposed about an axis. A pivotable first leg is connected to a pivotable second leg by a crossbar. A blocking pin is rotatably connected to the first leg and the second leg such that the locking mechanism abuts the blocking pin. A first solenoid includes a first rod abutting one of the first leg or the second leg. The first rod extends a first distance perpendicular to the axis and is configured to exert a first force to push the first leg and second leg away from the solenoid. The first leg and second leg are configured to pivot away from the first solenoid such that the blocking pin no longer abuts the locking mechanism.

    Abstract: An output load limiter is provided in an actuator to prevent excessive drive torque from being transmitted from a primary mover through the actuator. The actuator includes a housing, an output shaft mounted for rotation in the housing about an axis, and a drive member. The output shaft includes an external, helical spline. The drive member includes an internal helical spline engaged with the external helical spline to transmit a drive torque to the output shaft. The internal and external splines have sufficient length along the axis to allow translation of the drive member along the axis relative to the output shaft between a first position where the drive member can transmit a drive torque to the output shaft to rotate the output shaft about the axis and a second position where the drive member is restrained from transmitting additional drive torque to the output shaft.

    Abstract: A load limiter for preventing stall torque from being transmitted from a power drive unit to the flight control surfaces of an aircraft. The present invention provides such a load limiter in a package having lower weight and smaller spacial requirements than has been heretofore possible. The power drive unit of the aircraft generates torque which is transmitted from a rotating input shaft to a worm gear, to a helical gear, to a ball screw, and to the flight control surface of the aircraft. If the flight control surface becomes jammed or otherwise prevented from movement, the ball screw, and consequently the helical gear, stop rotating. However, the stall torque of the power drive unit will continue to cause the input shaft to rotate, which will in turn cause the worm gear to rotate and interact with the helical gear. Since the helical gear cannot move, the helical gear will cause the worm gear to axially translate relative to the input shaft. The worm gear is normally prevented from such movement by compression and tension springs laterally flanking the worm gear, but by sizing the springs to be overcome by the level of the stall torque, one of the springs, depending on the direction of rotation of the input shaft, will compress to allow the worm gear to axially move and thus cause a toothed plated attached to the worm gear to engage a mating toothed plated fixed to the actuator housing. The engaged plates therefore ground the stall torque to the housing to prevent damage to the flight control surface and its transmission. The load limiter is disengaged by reversing the direction of rotation of the input shaft.

    Abstract: A compact ball screw type actuator having both load limiting capability above a pre-determined value and position holding capability at all load values above, below and at the pre-determined value is provided through use of a resettable force limiting assembly acting directly on an element of the ball screw, in conjunction with a friction drag device operating directly upon an input shaft operatively coupled through a crossed-helical gear train to the ball screw.
