In a first aspect, a method for installing in an electrical power transmission system a connection using a coaxial superconducting cable, includes determining a reactance of a conventional cable suitable for the connection; installing the coaxial superconducting cable, and increasing a reactance of the coaxial superconducting cable, in such a way that the reactance of the superconducting cable is substantially equal to the reactance of the conventional cable. In particular, increasing the reactance of the coaxial superconducting cable includes connecting in series with the coaxial superconducting cable an inductive element, preferably made from a superconducting material.

A superconducting cable includes a cryogenic fluid, a superconducting conductor, and a cryostat. A layer impervious to the cryogenic fluid is provided between the superconducting conductor and the cryogenic fluid. The superconducting conductor operates in a space substantially free from fluids liquefying at a temperature greater than or equal to an operative temperature of the superconducting cable. A method for protecting a superconducting cable from formation of balloons includes isolating the superconducting conductor from the cryogenic fluid using a layer impervious to the cryogenic fluid and operating the superconducting conductor in a space substantially free from fluids liquefying at a temperature greater than or equal to an operative temperature of the superconducting cable. A current transmission/distribution network including at least one of the superconducting cables is also disclosed.

A superconducting cable for high power with at least one phase includes a superconducting core wherein a plurality of elements are housed, which are structurally independent and magnetically uncoupled, each of which includes—for each phase—a couple of phase and neutral coaxial conductors, each formed by at least a layer of superconducting material, electrically insulated from one another by interposition of a dielectric material. As a result of the distribution of the superconducting material into several coaxial conductive elements, the cable allows to transmit high current amounts in conditions of superconductivity, while using a high-temperature superconducting material sensitive to the magnetic field. The conductive elements are connected at the ends to yield a mean exploitation efficiency of 100%.
