At least one constituent of the superabrasive table exhibits a substantially monotonic distribution of size, concentration, or both in a selected direction of the superabrasive table. In another aspect of the present invention, a method of fabricating a superabrasive article is disclosed. A plurality of particles may be provided that exhibit a substantially monotonic distribution of particle size, concentration, or both in a selected direction. The particles may be subjected to a high-temperature, high-pressure process to consolidate and form a self-supporting body.

At least some of the plurality of superhard bearing pads may include a plurality of sub-superhard bearing elements defining a bearing surface. At least some of the plurality of sub-superhard bearing elements may be spaced from one another by one or more voids to impart a selected amount of heat transfer and hydrodynamic film formation thereon during operation. The bearing assembly may also include a support ring that carries the plurality of superhard bearing pads. In addition, at least a portion of the sub-superhard bearing elements may extend beyond the support ring.

Methods of wearing-in superhard bearing elements over time so that hydrodynamic or near hydrodynamic lubrication of opposed bearing surfaces develops and thrust-bearing apparatuses. In an embodiment, a thrust-bearing apparatus including first and second thrust-bearing assemblies is received or provided. Each thrust-bearing assembly includes a support ring and a plurality of superhard bearing elements mounted circumferentially around the support ring. The superhard bearing elements of each thrust-bearing assembly are oriented so as to be opposed to one another. The thrust-bearing apparatus is operated so as to wear-in the bearing surfaces of both thrust-bearing assemblies such that the bearing surfaces of the superhard bearing elements of each thrust-bearing assembly substantially correspond to one another and become very smooth providing for at least near hydrodynamic operation in which a fluid film is present between the bearing surfaces of the first and second thrust-bearing assemblies so as to limit contact therebetween.
