Abstract:
Non-friable siloxane gels which can be used for gel dressings and in medical prostheses are made from compositions comprising (A) alkenyl-containing polydiorganosiloxanes; (B) hydrosilicon compounds having at least 3 Si-H groups; (C) SiH end-blocked polydiorganosiloxanes and (D) a catalyst. These compositions cure rapidly at room temperature having a ratio (RHAlk) of SiH:Si-Alkenyl of from 3:1 to 20:1, the percentage of silicon-bonded H atoms provided by (C) not being less than 81.36-(3.6.times.RHAlk) and having a value of from 10% to 90%.

The apparatus is adapted to be held in one hand of an operator from mixing components of a composition packaged as two or more individually stable components of substantially equal volume and viscosity each in a receptacle having a closure made of a material which can be ruptured, and to dispense the mixed composition by a manual operation. The device comprises a mixing housing, separate chambers for the receptacles, piercing means for piercing the receptacles, plunger means for expelling a component from the chamber into the mixing region, a mixing element in the mixing region, and a passageway which contains means for actuating the mixing element and through which the mixed composition may be expelled from the mixing region. The construction and arrangement is such that relative movement of approach may be caused between the piercing means and the receptacles to rupture the receptacles, and between the plunger means and the mixing housing to urge the component into the mixing region, the mixing element may be actuated to mix the components in the mixing region, and relative movement of approach may be brought about between elements of the device to discharge the mixed composition through said passageway. The device is principally intended for mixing and dispensing of silicone foam to provide foamed dressings.

The specification is directed to polysiloxane foams. There are disclosed compositions capable of curing at room temperature which comprise a hydroxypolysiloxane, an alkylhydrogen polysiloxane, a tin compound as catalyst and finely divided filler. According to the invention storage stability of these foam forming polysiloxane compositions is improved by use as filler of silica which has been pretreated to render is hydrophobic. The subject compositions may comprise two components which do not require individual mixing prior to mixing together of the components. The compositions may be packaged in any convenient manner. The compositions may be used for a variety of purposes, for example to provide medical dressings.

A medical-surgical dressing comprising a reinforced sheet of silicone elastomer foam having a thickness not exceeding 10 millimeters, one of the surfaces of the sheet having a surface layer of open cell foam and the other surface having a substantially non-cellular surface skin. The dressing may be manufactured by a process comprising depositing a liquid foamable silicone composition on an absorbent surface, allowing the composition to foam and set to an elastomer and thereafter separating the foam sheet from the substrate.The dressings are useful e.g. for the treatment of wounds, burns and as liners for plaster casts.

A multi-component foamable silicone composition is described and claimed which is capable of curing quickly at 20.degree. C. to provide a low density foamed mass. The composition comprises (A) one or more polydiorganosiloxanes having not less than three alkyl-hydrogensiloxane units per molecule, (B) one or more polydiorganosiloxanes having not less than two alkenyl-siloxane units (C) a liquid alcohol, (D) a fluorinated silicone foam stabilizing material and (E) a platinum catalyst for promoting reaction between the components. The composition may be packaged as two or more individually stable parts of substantially equal volume and viscosity each in a receptacle of material which is adapted to be opened by rupture so as to release the components for admixture. The composition is intended for use in forming a foam medical dressing by dispensing onto a surface e.g. an open wound and allowing the composition to cure at room temperature.

The specification describes and claims a method of making therapeutic rings from a curable silicone rubber based composition. The rings are capable of controlled release of the therapeutic agent in the human or animal body. The method includes the steps of:(i) extruding a first composition comprising a therapeutic agent and a first elastomer-forming silicone composition to provide a core;(ii) extruding a second composition comprising a second elastomer-forming silicone composition to provide a sheath enclosing the core;(iii) bringing together end portions of a piece of extruded core and sheath to form a ring,(iv) effecting crosslinking of the extruded core, and(v) effecting crosslinking of the extruded sheath.

The specification is directed to making noncellular dressings such as gelatinous wound dressings. According to the invention medical and surgical dressings are made by use of packages which may be held in the hand, and which contain the components of two part curable polysiloxane compositions in such a manner that the component may be mixed in predetermined proportions and dispensed therefrom under the influence of propellant gas. The method avoids the need for manual mixing of such compositions during production of dressings.
