At least one wire can be disposed within the groove so as to fit within the outer perimeter of the sheath. Wires disposed in grooves can include heating elements and temperature sensing elements. Sheath can further include a graduated catheter located inwardly from the cylindrical section and a handle located inwardly from the graduated catheter.

The present disclosure is directed to a cryoprobe capable of improving the cooling power of a cryosurgical system. A representative cryoprobe can comprise an inner cooling chamber and a radial chamber, positioned between the inner cooling chamber and an exterior wall of the cryoprobe. Preferably, the radial chamber is formed to have a low thermal conductivity so as to significantly reduce the transfer of heat between the body and the refrigerant in the inner chamber during a cryosurgical procedure. The radial chamber can be fabricated such that a vacuum can be applied to the radial chamber to further reduce heat transfer between the body and the inner cooling chamber. The radial chamber extends partially along the length of the cryoprobe such that inner cooling chamber is in direct thermal contact with the exterior wall at a cryoprobe tip.

Following use of the applicator, the applicator can be recharged by attaching the applicator to the base unit and refilling a cryogenic reservoir in the applicator from a cryogenic storage tank contained within the base unit. The base unit can include a self-contained assembly for generating a cryogenic fluid such that the cordless cryosurgical applicator system is essentially self-sufficient when attached to an electrical power source.

A heating element can be operably secured to an inner surface of the cryoprobe tips, wherein the heating element can then be connected to an electrical current source such that heat is generated at the cryoprobe tip as the electrical current flows through the heating element. In one version, the heating element can comprise a resistive element laminated between layers of insulation while in other, alternative versions, the heating element can comprise a small diameter resistance wire attached directly to an inner surface within the cryoprobe tip. The cryoprobe can include a thermocouple secured within the cryoprobe tip so as to take temperature measurements during both freezing and thawing cycles. In some versions, the heating element can be operably secured within the cryoprobe tip using an expanding or rotating mandrel.
