Abstract:
The detection and recording of commercials (12) within content (10) to provide viewers with a choice to avoid watching commercials or view commercial content at a selected time. This invention proposes a way to allow the user to navigate through commercials (12) of interest without having to sit linearly through the commercials by recording the commercials and presenting the commercials to the user as a set of thumbnails, a menu or a Table of Contents mechanism. Content analysis algorithms can be used to choose the most representative key frame for the thumbnail. The invention can be used in conjunction with techniques to automatically delete commercials from recordings. The commercials are not watched by the viewer during initial viewing but are presented at user-selected times so the user can selectively view the commercials.
Abstract:
An optical disc playing system, comprises a selecting apparatus for receiving a command from a user, which requires to play a part of content of a program in the optical disc; a sending apparatus for sending a request which requires to provide the related information of said part of content; a receiving apparatus for receiving the related information; and a reading-out apparatus for reading out the received related information and said part of content. An optical disc playing method using said system comprises the steps of: receiving a command from a user, which requires to play a part of content of a program in the optical disc; sending a request which requires to provide the related information of said part of content; receiving the related information; and playing the disc in coordination with said part of content using the received related information.
Abstract:
Instead of using events stored in the datastream itself, applications can retrieve event information from the playlist on a record carrier such as DVD and blu-disc. By retrieving the event information from the playlist changes in the event information do not require reprocessing of the data stream. In addition the application knows before the start of the playback of the data stream where the events are located and what functionality in terms of resources is required. A better scheduling of resources is thus possible.
Abstract:
A digital broadcast method and system for supporting DVD recording, and relevant receiving and recording method and device are disclosed. A navigation data used for forming a DVD program is loaded into a private data stream of a TS stream transmitted by a broadcast system to let the system of the present invention be compatible with existing digital broadcast systems. A receiving end receives the navigation data when receiving audio data and video data Therefore, it is possible to record the program in a DVD format so that a user enjoys the same feature-rich scanning function as issued DVDs when replaying programs.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an extensible disc player that is upgradeable to play new content types. The player's capability can be extended by downloading an appropriate decoder from a web server via the Internet. In this way, the player can play back contents that it does not originally support. If the content type is unknown, the player will check whether the disc contains a URL for linking to a web site containing an appropriate decoder. If the disc contains the URL, the player will access the web site to download the appropriate decoder. In a similar manner, the capability of a recorder can also be expanded by downloading appropriate encoders from the Internet.
Abstract:
A method (6,7) and device (8) for recording and/or reproducing interactive television data via a digital interface (45), wherein said data is transmit inside modules through a DSMCC data/object carousel (2) with a first bandwidth. The method comprises the steps of calculating repetition rates of said modules in said DSMCC carousel (2), recording said modules, together with said repetition rates of said modules, from said digital interface (45) to a storage medium of a recording device, and/or playing back said data inside modules through a second DSMCC Data/Object Carousel (4) over said digital interface (45) and from a storage medium, preferably using the complete available bandwidth of said digital interface for said DSMCC Data/Object Carousel (4), wherein said modules are preferably re-inserted over the digital interface (45), such as into a Transport Stream, at a repetition rate being stored together with said modules on said storage medium.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a WebDVD player to link legacy DVD discs to related web sites and to play normal WebDVD discs. The player includes a database containing a URL list of popular DVD content providers. After the disc is loaded into the player, the player reads the provider unique identification (PVR ID) and uses the PVR ID to find URL of associated content provider from URL list. URL of content provider is indexed to a table containing a list of some popular title identifications (Title IDs) of discs, location of Title ID on the disc, method of deriving Title ID, and URL of a related web site. The player then attempts to derive the Title ID of the disc according to the method in the table and compares the derived Title ID with the data in the Title ID column of the table to find the corresponding URL for locating the web pages of the content provider.
Abstract:
A method is described for recording an audiovisual information stream comprising a background sound stream (2), a background graphics stream (3), an optional original sound stream (20) containing original spoken text, at least one optional translation sound stream (21, 22) containing spoken text in different languages, and at least one optional subtitle picture stream (30, 31, 32) containing subtitles. A first information stream (140) is recorded which contains the background sound stream (2), and a second information stream (15) is recorded which contains the background graphics stream (3). The optional translation sound streams (21, 22) are each recorded as individual elementary audio files (142, 143; 242, 243; 342, 343) separate from the first and second information streams, and the optional subtitle graphics streams (30, 31, 32) are each recorded as individual elementary graphics streams (151, 152, 153; 351, 352, 353) separate from the first and second information streams.
Abstract:
The apparatus is suitable for managing a data carrier (1) obtaining a fast data transfer from it to the apparatus when the carrier is driven with a constant angular velocity (CAV). It comprises a motor (3) for driving the carrier, an optical head having light source (16) for reading and/or writing data stored form and in it. Furthermore, it comprises means, involving a processor set (50) for determining the frequency of the use of files contained in the data carrier, such that the more frequently used ones are put in a location for a faster transfer. While the transfer is being performed, the motor and the light source arc stopped so that supply energy is economized, which is interesting for a battery-operated apparatus. Application: The invention is well suited for small size R/W optical discs (SFFO).
Abstract:
An apparatus (270) and method is disclosed for preventing a viewer from switching from a channel when an advertisement is being displayed on the channel. The apparatus (270) and method comprises an advertisement controller (270) in a video playback device (150) that (1) prevents a viewer of a direct (non-recorded) broadcast from switching channels when an advertisement is displayed, and (2) prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast forwarding the recorded program in order to skip past advertisements that were recorded with the program. A viewer may either watch the advertisements or pay a fee in order to be able to change channels or fast forward when the advertisements are being displayed.
