In the packet voice data communication method, upon generation of voice data, a packet voice channel is assigned, and an active state is entered where packetized voice data is transmitted on the voice channel. If there is no voice data for a predetermined time period while in the active state, the assigned voice channel is released, and an inactive state is entered where no voice data is transmitted. If the next voice data is generated while in the inactive state, the voice channel active state is entered where a voice channel is assigned to transmit the next voice data, and the voice data is transmitted.

There are provided a common channel message communicating device and method in a CDMA communication system. In a base station of the common channel message communicating device, a control message generator generates a control message including information representative of a spreading code for spreading a reverse common channel message, and a forward common channel transmitter transmits the control message on a forward common channel. In a mobile station, a control message analyser analyses information representative of an assigned spreading code included in the control message received on the forward common channel, a spreading code generator generates a spreading code based on the spreading code information, and a channel transmitter spreads the reverse common channel message by the spreading code and transmits the spread reverse common channel message.

A mobile station transmits a location registration message to a target BSC when moving to the target BSC adjacent to a source BSC. Upon receipt of the location registration message, the target BSC transmits a location update message for updating a location of the mobile station to a centralized database. Upon receipt of the location update message, the centralized database updates dormant state information for the mobile station to connect the target BSC to the source BSC. The centralized database transmits a location update result message indicating complete update of the dormant state information to the target BSC.

There is provided a data transmitting method in a CDMA system. In the CDMA system, a control hold state and an active state are set for data transmission between a mobile station and a base station. The control hold state is entered to transmit a control signal on a dedicated control channel and the active state is divided into a low rate transmission substate for transmitting a small amount of data on the dedicated control channel or/and a fundamental channel and a high rate transmission substate for transmitting a large amount of data on a supplemental channel and on at least one of the dedicated control channel and the fundamental channel. When a large amount of user data is generated in the mobile station, the mobile station generates a supplemental channel request message including supplemental channel request information needed to transit from the control hold state to the high rate transmission substate without interposition of the low rate transmission substate and state transition information needed to transit from the control hold state to the active state, and transmits the supplemental channel request message to the base station.

A method for determining a gating rate in a base station for a CDMA communication system is disclosed. The method comprises transmitting information for assigning a dedicated control channel and a traffic channel to a mobile station, when a call is generated; after call setup, transmitting a message requesting mobile station's capability information to the mobile station; receiving the capability information including gating availability information of a reverse pilot signal and information about at least one gating rate, transmitted from the mobile station in reply to the request message; and determining a gating rate according to the capability information, transmitting information about the determined gating rate to the mobile station, and transitioning to an active sate. The mobile station's capability information includes information about gating availability and at least one gating rate, when gating is available.

The receiving RLP processor requests the transmitting RLP processor to retransmit a failing RLP frame assigned with a new identifier determined by the receiving RLP processor. Responding to the request, the transmitting RLP processor retransmits the failing RLP frame assigned with the requested new identifier instead of the original sequence number.
