摘要:
An error protection method for multimedia improves data recovery and channel throughput in channels which cause a random error and a burst error by using a rate compatible punctured convolutional code (RCPC) and an automatic retransmission on request (ARQ). In a process of decoding a plurality of packets of given information, the error protection method includes the steps of a) decoding one of the plurality of packets, b) decoding another packet when an error occurs during the decoding in step a), c) decoding a combination of the packets from steps a) and b) or a third packet when an error occurs in step b), and d) repeating step c) until the decoding error no longer occurs. The error protection method has the characteristics of both Type-1 and Type-2 ARQ methods. Therefore, one can obtain constant channel throughput in a channel containing burst errors, a channel containing random errors, and a channel in which the two types of error patterns coexist simultaneously.

A motion estimating method for determining a motion vector, using a bit rate-distortion technique in image compression. The motion estimating method includes the steps of obtaining a motion vector (x.sub.o, y.sub.o) which minimizes a predetermined error function, assuming a preferred motion vector (x, y), calculating the difference (x-diff, y-diff) between (x.sub.o, y.sub.o) and (x, y), obtaining the number of bits needed to encode the x-diff and y-diff, determining a bias based on a bias model according to the bit number, obtaining a final cost function value based on the difference between a cost function value and a bias, comparing the final cost function value with a predetermined allowance limit, determining the assumed motion vector (x, y) as a motion vector for a current macroblock and updating the allowance limit by using the cost function value, if the cost function value is smaller than the predetermined allowance limit and discarding the assumed motion vector (x, y) if the cost function value is not smaller than the predetermined allowance limit. The disclosed method is successful in increasing the compression rate.

An adaptive multiplexing/demultiplexing method, and a multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) using the same and a computer readable medium including software for implementing the same in an H.324M system, are provided. The adaptive MUX/DEMUX in the H.324M system includes one or more MUX/DEMUXs having different complexities, between an H.223/Annex C MUX/DEMUX and an H.223 MUX/DEMUX.

A wireless packetization apparatus for transmitting and/or receiving multimedia data including video data in a radio transmitting/receiving system, and a method thereof are provided. According to the present invention, error resilience can be increased by adding error protection codes to one portion and a plurality of portions of multimedia-related header information, respectively, when multimedia data such as video data requiring real time or low delay are transmitted and received in a wireless environment, and a packet drop rate can thereby be reduced. Also, information can be more precise recovered by inserting length identifier and length information on an information region into the header.

A multiplexing method for multimedia communication is provided, which is compatible with the H.223 protocol by changing a header of a multiplex protocol data unit (MUX-PDU). The multiplexing method includes the steps of encoding media data, and multiplexing the media data encoded in the step (a) in units of a predetermined frame, and inserting a second flag having a predetermined length with an auto-correlation into the frame after a first flag representing the opening and closing of the frame. Therefore, the probability of detecting the MUX-PDU by a receiver is increased by adding a flag having a high auto-correlation to the H.223 MUX-PDU frame, thereby increasing error-resiliency.
