Abstract: Redundant filtration system that includes at least one barrier filter as a process filter, the barrier filter having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic paths, allowing both fluid and gas permeability. The need for vents is eliminated, as is an intermediate drain filter. The device also can be dried in series. The filtration system includes a network of conduits and receptacles, the network receiving liquid raw and/or starting material at one end, conducting it through the process stream defined thereby, and producing the desired liquid product at another end. The network is provided with one or more inputs for introducing liquid raw material into the fluid process stream, and one or more output ports for discharging fluid out of the fluid process stream. The network is preferably an essentially closed network, and also, preferably sterile and/or aseptic.

Abstract: Single-use integral chromatography unit having an inlet and an outlet, and comprising one or more plates or pairs of filter plates interposable between a pair of end plates. In certain embodiments, each of the filter plates comprises a polymeric framework with one or more membranes supported therein. The filter plates and end plates may be assembled to form a substantially fixed, substantially water-tight, integral stack. Fluid entering the unit through a common inlet passes the membrane or membranes of each filter plate substantially contemporaneously prior to exiting the unit through a common outlet (cf, “parallel” flow). The assembly is a modular design, as multiple pairs of plates can be stacked in a suitable holder to form a single chromatography unit.

Abstract: An apparatus for treating a biological fluid, comprising a plurality of filtration devices. In some embodiments, each of the plurality of filtration devices comprising at least one inlet and at least one outlet; and a first insert plate and a second insert plate opposite the first insert plate, wherein the plurality of filtration devices is disposed therebetween. In some embodiments, each filtration device has a vent port. A manifold for each of the inlets, outlets, and vent ports is optionally fluidly connected. In another embodiment, hose barb connectors or the like may be protected from damage and/or exposure by being recessed in the device or positioned at a periphery of the device. Embodiments include apparatus and methods to achieve dripless connect/disconnect and to reduce the number of sterile-to-sterile connections.
