Polyorganosilanes are prepared by contact reaction of organodihalosilanes with alkali metal fine particles in an organic solvent. Prior to the contact reaction, a triorganohalosilane is contacted with the dispersion of alkali metal fine particles in organic solvent for removing reactive oxygen and moisture from the dispersion. Formation of a siloxane bond in the polysilane backbone is minimized, and polyorganosilanes having a minimal oxygen content are obtained.

Polycyclic aromatic group-pendant polysilanes of the following general formula are described.[(R.sup.1 R.sup.2 Si).sub.k (R.sup.3 R.sup.4 Si).sub.m ].sub.nwherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are, respectively, a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon group provided that at least one of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having a polycyclic aromatic group or a biphenyl group. When the polysilane is doped with an oxidative dopant, the polymer is rendered electrically conductive and has thus wide utility in various fields of photoconductive and electrically conductive materials without involving degradation of the polysilane.

A method for forming a metal pattern by the micro-stamping process involves the steps of treating a substrate bearing a thin film of a reducing silicon polymer with a solution containing a salt of a metal having a standard oxidation-reduction potential of at least 0.54 volt, allowing metal colloid to deposit on the substrate surface, stamping a pattern of an alkane thiol to the substrate surface for transferring the pattern to the metal colloid-bearing silicon polymer thin film, and effecting electroless metal plating for forming a metal pattern only on the region of the silicon polymer thin film which is not covered with the alkane thiol pattern. The finely defined metal pattern can be formed on any type of substrate though inexpensive simple steps and has good adhesion to the substrate.

A crosslinkable silicon polymer composition is provided comprising (A) a silicon polymer containing Si--Si bonds and Si--H groups and having a Mn of 500-500,000, (B) a polyfunctional aromatic carboxylic acid allyl ester, and (C) an organic peroxide or azo compound. The composition cures into a crosslinked polysilane film which is solvent insoluble, tough, and abrasion resistant.

Crosslinkable polysilane compositions contain (1) an alkenylsiloxy--terminated polysilane and a compound having at least three hydrosilyl groups in a molecule, (2) a hydro--siloxy--terminated polysilane and a compound having at least three alkenyl groups in a molecule, (3) a hydro--terminated polysilane and a compound having at least three alkenyl groups in a molecule, or (4) an alkenyl--terminated polysilane and a compound having at least three hydrosilyl groups in a molecule. By effecting hydrosilylation reaction between the components in the presence of a hydrosilylation catalyst, a tough crosslinked film is obtained without causing scission of a polysilane chain.
