A rotor of induction motor comprises a rotary shaft, a cylindrical rotor core fixedly secured on the rotary shaft, a conductive cover fixed on the outer circumferential surface of the rotor core, the conductive cover being formed of a composite material of magnetic material and electrically highly conductive material to have a circumferential permeability smaller than a radial permeability, and a magnetic skin made of a magnetic material and provided on the outer circumferential surface of the conductive cover, the magnetic skin having a circumferential permeability and an electrical conductivity which are set to be larger than the circumferential permeability and an electrical resistivity of the conductive cover, respectively, whereby a loss due to a spatial higher harmonics magnetic flux of higher order generated by a pulsating magnetic flux of slots in a stator of induction motor can be prevented.

A motor current flowing through an inverter-driven induction motor is detected when voltage is applied to the induction motor by the inverter operated under a certain condition on the basis of the vector control. The detected current is converted to two components of a current vector in a d-q coordinate system. Motor constants are calculated on the basis of a component in the d-coordinate axis of a voltage reference set for creating the certain condition and the two converted components of the motor current detected at that time, and control constants in a vector control apparatus for the inverter-driven induction motor are set or adjusted in accordance with the calculated motor constants. According to this invention, the control constants in the vector control apparatus can be easily set or adjusted.

On the basis of the torque current component determined, the output voltage and frequency of the voltage-type inverter are controlled. Additionally, the rotational speed of the induction motor is estimated on the basis of the detected torque current component and the speed of the induction motor is controlled such that the estimated speed signal coincides with a speed command signal.

In order to diverge additional operating loss into an appreciable depth of the rotor to thereby suppress the increase in the operating loss, the rotor comprises a cylindrical member having a circumferential resistivity which is larger than axial and radial resistivities and circumferential permeability which is smaller than axial and radial permeabilities, and a core disposed in the cylindrical member and having an axial permeability which is smaller than circumferential and radial permeabilities.
