A process for the modification of alkyl halogenated polyarylenes with a derivative compound comprising the steps of forming a mixture of the derivative compound with a phase transfer catalyst, wherein the derivative compound has the formulaH--Z or M--Tand Z is derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of water or alcohols, thiols, amines, iminos and imides containing at least one O, N or S atom bonded to the H, M is Na or K and T is derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of cyanides, iminos, imides, carboxyls and hydroxyl; combining the mixture with the alkyl halogenated polyarylene in an organic solvent to form a second mixture; agitating the second mixture until the desired degree of substitution has taken place and thereafter separating the modified polyarylene which contains a Z or a T group.

A process for the addition of pendant groups to polyarylenes comprises the steps of charging a reaction vessel with a solution of a polyarylene and a Friedel-Crafts catalysts; said polyarylene having the formula ##STR1## adding to the reaction vessel a pendant forming group G, wherein G is selected from the group consisting of sulfonyl halides, sulfonamide halides, alkylhalides, acylhalides and phosphorus acid halides; heating the contents of the reaction vessel to form a substituted polyarylene having the formula ##STR2## and thereafter recovering the substituted polyarylene. The substituted polyarylenes are novel and have utility as a semipermeable membrane and a process for the separation of gases therewith is also provided.

A protective coating which is resistant to attack by basic solutions is formed from interpolymers containing maleic anhydride (MAH). An article is coated with a solution of the dissolved ammonium or amine salts of the MAH interpolymer, or if the article itself contains MAH the salts may alternatively be formed on the surface of the article by applying a basic solution containing the ammonium or amine ions. The article is then dried and heated at a temperature sufficient to form the cyclic imide structure from the ammonium or amine salt of the MAH, typically about 160 to 200.degree. C.

A plasticized resin system is described, and the system comprises an intimate mixture of(a) an interpolymer derived from at least one vinyl monomer and an .alpha.,.beta.- unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or the lower alkyl esters thereof, and(b) a plasticizing amount of a hydroxy substituted fatty acid containing at least about eight carbon atoms.The plasticized resin system also may contain at least one additional polar resin such as polycarbonates, polysulfones, polyesters, etc. The use of the hydroxy substituted fatty acid in this manner improves the processability of the interpolymers.
